1958 Chevrolet Facts

"The long, low and loaded '58 Chevrolet"

"So long, So low...So Supremely Smart!"

"Almost too new to be true!"

"Smoothest sprint on 4 wheels!"

Chevy cars for 1958 were indeed all new! This year is interesting due to it's one year only styling as well as the introduction of many new innovations. All new sheetmetal and interior design set it apart from other years. From it's all new grill with rust proof annodized aluminum grill screen and new dual headlight system to the all new tail light design.

This was the first year for the "X" frame design which allowed the car to sit lower. Also new for this year was the optional air ride suspension.

Standard engines for 1958 were the 145hp 235 6 cylinder or a 185hp 283 V-8. There was an optional 230hp 283, 250hp and 290hp 283 (both of which were fuel injected) as well as the all new 348 which was available in 250hp, 280hp, 305hp or 315hp versions.

The famous Impala made it's debut for 1958 (known as the "Belair Impala" for this first year) as well as the Biscayne which sold 377,000 in it's series. Paint consisted of 15 solid or 14 two tone color combinations to choose from.

Some highlights for '58 include:

  • New safety girder "X" frame (30% stronger)
  • 2 piece driveshaft
  • Full coil spring suspension
  • New 348 engine available in 250hp, 280hp, 305hp and 315hp
