New to your site and enjoying it & have learned a little so far. I've got to re-build a 348 for my brothers hotrod and was wondering about Kanters master re-build kit or maybe Egge's kit . Is there a better kit out there & the guys at Egge's only offer a stock compression ratio for their piston but Kanter offers a high compression/ high performance piston. Any thoughts on which kit to buy or any other manufacturers ? Thank you in advance ! Charlie

Charlie, It is important when choosing cast pistons that you buy some with the steel inserts in the pin area. The last 3 sets of EGGE pistons I have used had the steel inserts. Before buying any brand, make sure they have steel inserts. I would check with Showcars. The offer other compression ratios other than stock replacement.

charlie, just checked the catalogue and Showcars now offers only cast piston 9 1/2 compression ratio for 348. If you want more it appears you will have to upgrade to forged.

I think the last time I talked to them, their piston had the steel reinforcing. Call or email to be sure.

Here in Alb the altitude is about 5000'. I was going to build this motor with about a 9:1 piston but the block has the valve notch at the top of the block . Does that mean I need to get a piston with a 10:1 advertised comp ratio to actually be about 9:1 ? Thanx

charlie, If you go to the home page and look under 348-409 castings you can look up just what your block is from the casting # on the back of the block behind the head on the drivers side. Here is a pic from this site and the link.

One notch on the 348 is car block. 9:1 is 9:1 unless you use 333 truck head.
