Has anyone tried to run a crossram on the street? How's it run? How about compared to a 2x4 set up? Where do you get linkage? -Mike

Hi Mike -- I too am interested in the answer to your question. If I recall correctly, Jim Kwiatkowski runs MT cross ram. :)

Mike,I've run a M/T Crossram for 20 years, the 409 runs very well I get 11 mpg with 3.55 rear end gears.I can't remember the difference compared to a 2x4 setup :dunno .The linkage came with my intake, you probably could use a universal crossram linkage. If you don't a Crossram, good luck finding one.The last Crossram sold for over $2,000.Here's a photo of my Crossram.

Jim, very cool set up! I have one tucked away for a rainy day. Was thinking new aluminium heads with MT power ram :brow

Here's some crossram carb linkage to go with your nice looking M/t crossram, how long have you had your intake tucked away ? Here's the link.

Jim, it was a lucky eBay purchase about two or three years ago. I would like to eventually run it on my Curt Harvey 482 stroker. Thanks for the link!:D

chevytaylor, after looking at that linkage, that is a nice setup,I might get one for myself.
Is the MT crossram the E ticket in intakes? I have one available for the boat, I was thinking the simpler the better for now...but could be persueded...
Longer plenum gives better performance a higher RPM, yes? So in a boat that needs a wide powerband maybe a airgap (someday) w/a single 4 would be a better all around setup?

The downside to the M/T cross ram vs some of the later factory(Chevy and Pontiac) and aftermarkets were the two separate plenums vs one common plenum. Look at some pictures of the Z28 cross ram to see what I mean.
Many of the Pontiac crossrams added a connector to both plenums to help dampen the intake reversion pulsations.
I've missed out on two 409 crossram deals. Once early 70s i read the IHRA rules as they were illegal, but the BBC guys ran them, then it was sold. One about 10 years ago at the Autirama swap meet one of the intake guys there had just bought it from another guy for $400. He decided to keep it for awhile and not resell it. But I have a Pontiac one that will go on a motor some day!
So a hole drilled between the two plenums (like the balancing tube on dual exhausts) would make it behave better?

The whole point of a crossram is long individual runners for each cylinder. Why make it a 360 degree? might just as well use the Offenhauser crossram adapters.

Probably for the same reason that I have 2 4's on my 348 61. For the WOW factor of our "W" motors.

Sooooo, Whats your views on the Offy adapters??:dunno

Boat correct it basically connects both plenums to help dampen the pulses.
Look at the Z28, later Pontiac factory cross ram intakes , The Smokey Ram, old Edelbrock street tunnel ram(not the tall one the cross ram style), 80s Chevy Cross Fire TBI intake, and I think even the Offy SBC and BBC cross rams with interchamgeable tops. But you can even look at the other "regular" tunnel rams and even the TPI EFI manifolds. ALL have a common plenum for al 8 cylinders and long runners for the torque. The common plenum and a larger plenum helps buffer the reversion pluses as well as allow all the cylinders to see all the carb barrels. Old manifolds that didn't have them like the original Edlebrock and M/T cross rams had fuel stand off above the carbs often needing a velocity stack to contain it.
The other extreme is an IR or individual runner manifold. Rarely done on carb motors and requires more CFM and throttle size compared to a non IR manifold. Alot harder to tune.
The M/T and old Edelbrock and Offy adapters are almost a cross between an IR and a full plenum intake.
There were alot more M/T Pontiac cross rams made and sold and used than 09s and almost everyone that had better luck used a crossover. I think I've even posted a picture of mine here in the past.

I'm no expert but I can't see the Offy cross ram adapters doing anything to improve performance. A regular cross ram has longer runners to take advantage of resonance tuning but the Offy adapters only add plenum volume. They might even add a bit of top end power but low speed drivability and throttle response would almost certainly suffer. I think they would look cool and work fine on a rat rod with a relatively small cam though.
I remember seeing a car that had single exhaust but the guy had bolted an extra exhaust tip to the back bumper to give the car a dual exhaust look,,, I kinda put cross ram adapters in the same category. But I've been wrong before.

They would work the same as having a 12" carb spacer. I don't see them working from a performance point.

Correction please, 481 stroker not 482.
Hey Jim, did you find a serious power increase with the M/T power ram over the standard inline 2 x 4 intake with iron heads?
Lets keep in mind the restrictive breathing capability of the iron 690-583 heads. Would the M/T power ram come into its own bolted to a couple of BWR alloy better breathing heads? :dunno

I think the crossram ran better, but I have no proof I ran 11.60's with the crossram, but I never ran the inline 2x4.My 690 heads had no port work done also,so with some ported heads your 481 should fly :D
