In process of assemblng a 348 engine going into a 36' chevy rat rod. When boiling/cleaning block the die cast plate/bypass valve that functions as mounting surface for canister oil filter broke when we tried to remove it. Replacement adapter plates to convert from canister to spin-on filters are readily available from Summit or Napa. Is the by-pass valve absolutely required or can I just run the adapter? I live in southern climate so don't experience cold weather/high oil pressure starting. Does oil flow normal through filter without the by-pass valve? Any actual experienced feedback would be appreciated. I understand the function of the bypass valve; however I can't find clarification on if I would loose/gain oil filtration efficiency if I don't run a bypass valve.

This one comes with the correct parts to do the entire swap.

Just finished machining...have not assembled yet; maybe in a couple of weeks.
Look at "348 ring compresser" using search engine; has some tips.
Your question will unlikely not get a response buried under my thread
on bypass valves. Several prior threads touch on piston assy......mostly use your fingers or a .001 feeler guage. Good luck

Finger compressers are as easy as anything out there.

May as well cover both items at once!

First, you don't use ring compressors on the 348's/409's, if you attempt to, I can almost guarantee a broken ring or two!

Second, under no circumstances block the "by-pass", it solves nothing. It will force 100% of the oil through the filter and COULD possibly slow or cut-down the delivery to the rest of the unit. This is especially true when the unit is "cold" and the oil is at it's thickest. IF the filter should become "blocked" for any reason, you will lose the unit! Hundreds of thousand's of hi-perf Chevrolets are running for years with the oil system "unmodified", it's all really simple logic.

We will not send any builds, SB's or BB's, down the highway with the by-pass plugged. If any customers want to perform this operation after delivery, so be it!

If you have ANY questions about this just call "Stan" at "Ohio Crankshafts" and have a brief discussion with him.

In the event of any type internal failure by the time the oil goes through the filter the damage will be too much either way, plugged or not. This is especially true with respect to "flattened" cam lobes.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. I prefer to have "dirty" oil getting to the bearings than none at all!!!!

The pictured trans-dapt spin on adapter uses the ford filter with built in bypass
