Can anyone here tell me what balancer was used on the 348/350 HP engine. Show cars says it was 6-1/4" X 1-3/16". Tommy sent me some pictures of his 61' 409/360 HP balancer and said it measured 6-3/4 across and thought it was the same as the 348/350. I talked to yet another source and they said it was 6-1/8"X3/4 with the step in the back so now I am really confused. Any help here would be appreciated.

I put a 409 balancer from Lamar Walden on my 348. Expensive but well worth it.

Can you be a little more specific? What 348 do you have? What was the advantage? Can you give dimentions?

My 60 335 hp balancer is 6 1/8 with the stepped back.

The 61 Parts Catalog says:
59-61 Pass w/3/2BC...w/o pulley (weight 6 1/8 O. D.).........3764318 $13.85
I'm guessing that the "weight" is referring to the stepped back.

It also show the same application for:

57 Pass w/TG
57-61 Pass., Corvette (FI w/ HL Cam, dual 4BC w HL Cam)
59-61 Pass., Corvette w/HL Cam, H/ per., Sp H/per.)

Cecil, The first pic is what I have seen on the 250, 280 and, 305 348's. The second pic is what I think you are saying is on your 335/348. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Dan,
The last pic in your post looks right from the front. Does the back side have the stepped ring like the one on the left in my pics?:scratch

The one on the left is off my 335 hp 60 FE engine. The one on the right is the standard 348, 283, 409 balancer and,. in fact is from a 409 truck engine.:)

Cecil & gearhead, That is exactly what I was trying to find out. The 3 pics I posted on the right are all the same balancer and looked right from the front but I wasn't sure about the step in the back. They do not have the step like the one Cecil posted. I believe they are SB. Anyone have one with the step in the back they would like to part with?

Cecil & Gearhead, Thanks for your input and posting the pics Cecil. Here is what I ended up with. Thanks to Ron at Damper Dudes...:cheers

Dan,
That's nice. Is it an original or did they build it? Since it's the same balancer used on the solid lifter 57-61 Corvettes probably one of the Corvette reproduction guys like Paragon might have them for those that are looking.

Cecil, Phil told me a while back that Paragon did remanufacture that balancer and the cost was 230.00. I called Paragon about a week or so ago and, the gal that I spoke with said that she couldn't find it in their inventory and would have to get back to me. Well she called yesterday and said they don't carry it. I think if I would have talked to someone with a bit more knowledge the answer may have been different. I was just looking to see what the actual cost and availability was. The balancer that I got was a result of my emailing your pic to Ron at Damper Dudes and him machining one from a SBC 350 balancer for a cost of 50.00. Hint Hint.....:D Thanks so much for providing that pic...:bow

By the way I emailed that pic to Ron on Monday and I got the balancer on Thursday...:D Thats what I call service. Ron said they usuly have aone day turnaround...:clap :clap :clap

Note, the OME balancer has a cast iron outer ring with a sand cast finish on the back half of it. easy to see.

Loren mentioned " cast iron ", and it reminded me of something on my " to do " list. In my haste to get my car together, I used a cast iron crankshaft pulley. Appears to be triple groove but the center is actually a spacer. Off of an old smallblock. Lines up perfect with water pump and power steering pump. Problem is, that sucker weighs about 100 lbs.!!!!! Okay, maybe not quite that much, but you get the picture. Can't be good on the front main bearing and surely robs a lot of horsepower. Gotta do research to find an aluminum replacement that is a good fit. Don't want to replace all the belts again. There is always something !!!:doh
