New electronic ignition; new carburetor; new plug wires. Engine runs smoothly at idle, but put it into gear, push on throttle slightly and it just dies. Happens whether it has 12-degrees advance or up to 20-degrees advance. Any suggestions on how to solve this?

Mike, Was the engine running properly with the old carb.? Have you checked vacuum reading with a gauge? Double check new carb for an open vacuum port.

Thanks. Will check for an open vacuum port.
I have had gm hei distributors act like that before. Disconnect the vac. advance from the distributor and try again. If the problem goes away, the wires on the pick-up assembly are probably broken/ chaffed. When you accelerate, it pulls on the wires as the vac. advance plate moves causing the engine to die. Another place to look is the airgap of the pick-up assembly. Some aftermarket ones are adjustable. Too close or far will cause starting problems and upper rpm problems. Also check if your accelerator pump is squirting. A couple of places to start looking.:cheers
