My son is building a 348 and had it line bored. He bought a oversized timing gear and chain from showcars. He says the chain is loose. You can move it at least a quarter inch on both sides. He called show cars to check the part number, they said he has the right one. He says this chain is as loose as an old engine when you take it apart. Show cars said they think 348 chains are all loose. Can anyone give me some help on this? Thanks, Eric

Requires 9-3101 Cloyes. Very expensive but have never had slop with align honed blocks.

Thats the one he has. He is going to order another one just to see if there is a difference. Any other ideas? Thanks for the reply.

Sorry Eric, can't contribute anything useful. I notice you say line bored and not align honed. Can't imagine why someone would do that other than mis-matched main caps or some sort of damage repair. Maybe too much iron removed. Just a guess on my part. This will take an oversize gear. You may see if Cloyes has a tech line and describe the problem Hopefully they can help or someone else from this forum may have an idea. Good luck...........

Eric,

J. P. Performance offers a .005 and a .010 oversize timing gear set for
348/409. They are located in Australia but will sell/ship to individuals.
You can e-mail them at: pistons@jp.com.au I have used their oversize
sets on line honed blocks. Also, according to a 2000 Cloyes catalog, the
9-3101 set is not listed as oversize. Hope this helps.

Gerry, Thanks alot for that info. I will file for future use. It is true the 9-3101 is not listed as oversize, but on a align honed block I tried a replacement gear set and had too much slop, the 9-3101 had a tight fit. Can't explain it , but it worked. Since the gears are common small block, seems like oversize gear sets would be easier to find. I bet the .010 oversize gear set you cited is exactly what Eric needs. Thanks again for posting, that info could save me and others a lot of search time in the future. :clap :clap
