Ok, I went to Hersey Park last weekend and found the 2 x 4 manifold with matching carbs that I have been looking for. So now my problem is " two much fuel, not enought juice to the plugs"
I get on the phone with Jeg's to order the MSD with the 6al box and the they tell me "they don't make a distributir for the W block. Now , I'm comfused. I see pictures of and aftermarket distributors on 409 motors. Someone has to be making them.
Does anyone know where I can get a similar set/up .

Mallory still makes a distributor that fits the 409 but I think it is only available in the points type or the older Unilite style electronic setup which I've heard works fine but if they do quit they will do it without warning. At that point they say you had better have a spare distributor or a good pair of shoes with you. Also the Malory units for the 409 have no vacume advance. Apparently Show Cars http://www.show-cars.com/index.html has a HEI style unit that fits the 409 and they also sell an adaptor sleeve that allows you to use any regular Chevy distributor Including any aftermarket unit such as the MSD as well. Curt Harvey http://www.mr409.com/ also sells the adaptor. There is also another way you can go that's highly recomended by those who have gone that way and that is to send your stock distributor to The Ignition Man and get him to rebuild it and install a modern electronic module in it. I think he uses an MSD unit. If you do a search on this site using IgnitionMan or ignition you will see that he answers alot of question here and knows his buisness. The advantage of getting someone like him to do your distributor is that he can set up the advance curve to suit your particular engine combination.

Also, NOTHING in the world wrong with a Unilite, people just have to read the instructions. They come with a porcelain ballast resistor in the box, and many think these are for systems without resistors, when in truth, they are a second resistor, for the Unilite. First resistor resists coil, then from coil + to Mallory resistor, then out resistor to Unilite red input wire. Input volts down from that of coil, to between 7.5 to 9.0, will allow Unilite to live. I spin Unilites on my Sun distributor machine using the machine's 6 volt power source, no problems getting a clear and strong pattern or spark.
And, stock coil with Unilite, no drivers for any bigger coil, plug gaps down, .035 max, .032 better. Stand alone Unilites don't make any more voltage than a new set of points do, on their first spark they make.
It is also not so brilliant to trigger any CD box, like the 6AL, with a complete separate ignition system, like PerTronix or Unilite, when the correct MSD 8466-1 magnetic pickup can be installed into the W dists. Common sense is always the way to go.
