View Full Version : Offy Intake

I just ordered the 2 X 4 Offenhauser intake for my 348. I really don't care if both carbs work, I think I would just prefer to have to diddle with one.
So my question to the great folks out there in "w" motor land:
Can I block off the rear carb, fake a gas feed and linkage arrangement for looks and go with one carb?
I'm sorry if this has been covered, I tried to search it, but could not find this question.

WHY ???:scratch :dunno
I think you would run lean on the rear cylinders doing that,,

Front barrells of rear carb are close to center for idle and low speed. Front cyls would go lean I'm afraid. If you have two, might as well use them. Won't affect much unless you are always on it.

Bob,
Normally on a street car with dual quads you would use progressive linkage. The linkage operates the rear carb first. The primarys are the front barrels of a four barrel and therefore are nearer the center of the manifold. The attached picture is from the Show Cars (http://dr409.com/) on line catalog. You can get an idea of the way the linkage operates from the picture. If you use progressive linkage and keep your foot off the floor (I know you can't do that! :rofl ) you will accomplish what you want and still have the second carb for emergency use (read: blow the doors off the kids in ricers :beerbang ).

Oh, BTW, I just ordered some stuff from Show Cars for the first time. They were prompt and the parts fit properly.

Thanks Dick, and everyone else as well.
So if I were gonna fake it, I should put the good carb in back, and fake the front one. Why am I doing this, to save the extra $300-400 for another AFB, and to avoid the problems I read on here about multiple carb problems.

Bob, You can't fake it. Both carbs have to be in good working order. The engine will not run at low rpm without the fuel going through the idle circuit in both carbs. I dont know of anyone who has had AFB problems on this forum that has not worked out the problems. I would say a large majority have had no problems when starting with good carbs. The progressive linkage will allow you to effectively drive without the front carb, but still, it must be in place and in good shape. Go ahead and bite the bullet and buy 2 new 500 cfm carbs and be done with it. The new Offy deserves that. You will be glad you did in the future , every time you open the hood and see those shiny new carbs on the shiny new intake manifold.

You convinced me Ronnie, my wife echoes what you said, only her words were more like - in for a dime in for a dollar. So I will do that and get the prog linkage from Show Cars.
Thanks everyone, again you have helped me from going down the wrong path.

Ditto what Ronnie said plus buy a GOOD progressive linkage. It's been a few years since I did one of those but I think the high tech type progressive linkage was from Edelbrock. My set up was on a GM 2X4 so I don't know if the spacing is different with the Offy.

Offy intake has no problems with modern edelbrock carbs. I have had no problems tuning mine and I run solid linkage. Jetting the modern AFB is easy and the Offy fuel distribution is quite good on all 8 holes. I bought 2 used carbs off ebay and rebuilt them, and jetted to stock edelbrock specs.

I tried exactly what you want to do last summer on my 348. Like Ronnie says they WILL NOT run on carb. I used 500 edelbrocks with no choke and went two stages lean as per Ronnie's advice and my mileage might be better then with the one wcfb carb and iron intake manifold that was originaly on it. The linkage will do exactly what you want it to do(run off one carb) until you put your foot into it. It starts better with no choke in all temperatures then the wcfb did.

Thanks guys, by the way Robert, that engine looks great. Where do you get those small air cleaners, I love those.
I hate to give up my 4GC. Right now I don't even touch the gas pedal, just turn over the engine about 2 revs, once the Pertronix picks up the signal, she fires right up. I hope this set up will work as well.

Bob: I think they came from Sinclair's or Show Cars. I don't think they are a true performance item because of cfm flows but they do show off linkage and fuel line stuff. Sort of adds to the "wow" factor.

Bob, If you are inquiring as to where to buy the chrome air cleaners on Robert's car,,,,,, they are offered by Mr Gasket...... Should be easy to find at any dealer ( Summit---Jegs ) I use them because I like to see the carbs. Someday I will get around to calling K&N and asking about replacement filters in that size.

Go to any good parts store and they should have the K&N catalog to find the right filters.
You can also go taller on the filters if you have room,, dq

Bob..Yes, I watch people also at shows, cruise ins and agree with you that you use 2 4's and small air cleaners so people can see your stuff it attracts 'em. an unusual paint scheme also brings 'em in but I have ermine white which is as basic as a "florida tagged white Gran Marquis"
