I'm asking for advice about racing oil, thinking about using a 5 w 30 Royal Purple racing oil, used to use a 50 weight Valvoline racing oil for years and switched to a 20 w 50 on my engine builders advice a couple years ago. Now I read where this light weight oil is producing extra horsepower and still doing a good job of lubricating, but if low pressure readings make you nervous at idle or coming off the track during cooldown, you may not like this 5 w 30 stuff. Our main event is almost always 30 laps on a third mile oval asphalt track, I run a 3250 pound 75 Monte Carlo with a small block 400 and Turbo 350 trans in second gear, no shifting. Any one have any thoughts or experience with Royal Purple 5 w 30 racing oil?

For me it's Moble1 20W50 full synthetic oil always. If your engine is put together loose you may want the extra protection of the 20/50. I don't know how much better than Moble 1 Royal Purple is :dunno Volume is probably more important than pressure anyway!

In my lst motor I used 10-30 in stead of 20-50 which I normaly use. I had read the same kind if info saying the lighter oil produces more hp. My engine guy would always ask WHY????. Your supposed to use 20-50. But the last time we went back thru it we just polished everything up and put her back together. (a little looser than normal.) I did switch back to 20-50 for that reason. but when we had it apart everything looked great. No signs of abnormal wear or anything. Didnt bother me. No proof it actually made more power though.

I've always used 20W50 and have never had an oiling problem.

In 1986 Starting using Amsoil synthetic 20w50 racing oil in my 70 396 375hp COPO Nova and never changed brands in 20 years since. I may sound biased since I sell the stuff, but if there was something better i would be using or selling it.

Royal Purple, Neo, Redline, HPS Mobil 1 are all good but Amsoil still has a little edge.

But do your homework, there all different
