What do you guys think on work bench heights? I've been hearing about 36 inches is good but I have a small bench I made in my old garage that is just under 40 and it seems good to me.
I checked the specs on a typical garage stool most places sell and the height of that is 29 inches.
Just thought I'd see if anyone had any tips to share about this.
Thanks.
P.S. Hurry, I'm building this tomorrow! :D
I don't use a stool, 38-40" seems right for a 6' guy. Put the vise at a good work height, a place for elbows and beers....:cheers

34 inches in garage and 36 inches in basement. I can see tall is better if you are sitting at a stool. Maybe 40 inches. My eyes are not what they used to be. I think taller would work out. When I rebuilt my carbs I had to prop them up on a box to see all the small parts.

when and if you do the dishes does your back hurt? if so, the counter is to low. the same applies to your work bench. i'm 5'8" and standard counter hieght is too low for a bench for me, so if you are tall go alot higher!
my wife says i've never done the dishes so i don't know what i'm talking about.

Standard table hight and bathroom vanity is 30" standard counter top hight is 36" although I have seen lots of taller people like 37",38" & even 39" countertop hight. In my shop everything is 36" including my table saw that way I can put tables together for a larger work space if need be. Such as building and glazing large windows and doors. Also works good for laying out and cutting large items. What ever hight you do decide keep in mind to keep all heights the same. Another thought is to make your bench portable. If you move you can take it with you or move it around. On the cantilever ends of my benches I have a closet dowel for hanging C-clamps and the shelf below for storage. Good luck

I just walked out to the garage and measured mine. 38" for all of them. It's perfect for me, and I'm 5' 12". :)

Thanks for the input guys. I'm 5' 7" and think I'm going to go with 38 inches. Thought it best to split the difference. :)
This will be more of a work counter than a bench. Lots of wide drawers on full extension slides. The idea is to have a place for everything and keep everything in it's place. (unlike my current garage) :p
I have a pretty good plan drawn up so going to get started later...

It all depends on whose tape measure I use. If I use my grandson's, I'm 4' 24". :rofl

Bob,, set the height so when you are standing in front of the bench the bench top is about 6" below your elbow.
This way when you are working on something you won`t have to bend over or reach up.
I like to have two different height benches.
one taller for working on normal and smaller sized stuff and one lower for working on large parts.

DQ: 6 inches below my elbow is about 38 inches. I ended up going with 40 inches and it seems good both standing or sitting at this. 38 would have been good too. I had to make the "executive" decision so it ended up being 40.
I'll tell ya, nothing is cheap anymore! I'm going to have about $350 dollars or more into this thing. It's 16' long with 24 inches wide top. Made of 3/4 plywood for the carcase and 3/4 inch cabinet grade plywood for the drawer fronts and boxes. 20 drawers with full extension drawer slides. I put a 1/8" hardboard top on it that is replaceable when it gets worn out.
I'll have to get some pics to show it when the drawers are all in. I cut most of the pieces to make the drawers today. (8 more drawers to go)
Loving the new concrete! :brow Now it feels like a garage! Cars are just waiting to get back in. I already moved some of my tools in. It's like Christmas. LOL :rofl

I had to jump on this :-) you see the work bench height in my shop when I bought the place is 45". Sooo I am thinking some 7' dude lurked here before me. Been to busy to change it so I tossed a small pallet on the floor to equal things out. :rofl

Not a bad hieght at 40" Bob.
It`s too bad they don`t make plywood 6" wide.
24" is just a tad narrow but if you go any wider you use a heck of a lot more plywood and at todays prices that expensive,,,dq

The 24" countertop was intentional. Any more than that makes it hard to reach the back. I will be putting upper cabinets in so that helps there too.
Think of this as more of a counter/work bench. I'm lovin the 16' length though. I never had so much room! :brow The height reminds me of my drinking days. I swear it's the same height as the bar was at one of my old haunts. :D (drinking only water these days though)
Now if the heat/humidity would die down a bit I could get alot more done. Whew! it's been hot around here lately. Went scrounging around at a junk yard yesteday and left dripping wet! There wasn't a dry spot on my T-shirt. :cuss
I may be wrong but I don't remember such hot temps in the past. We would get a few real hot days but not as many as in recent years. Is this global warming? LOL
