Is there a tool that is especially made to cut exhaust pipe and leave a nice edge. The exhaust kit I ordered from Shafers fits great but the turn downs behind the rear wheels are a little too long. I don't want to use a cut off wheel as I think I'll never get the cut straight. Any help would be great!

Ross, Exhaust shops use a chain cutter, sorta like a giant tubing cutter. Takes just a few minutes. Maybe you could drop by a local shop and have them whack em off.

Sears has an exhaust pipe cutter. (around $20?) It's like a tubing cutter but has 4 wheels. Because of the 4 wheels, you don't have to spin it 360 degrees around the pipe. The chain type like mentioned above looks like it would be good too.

I don't think it would be too hard to use the cut off tool, then just dress up the cut with a grinder.

Ross,
I sent you an email but I don't think it went through. Do you want the ends of the tail pipes to look like the factory ones? I can send you detail photos if you like. I have a complete NOS exhaust system on the '61SS that I'm restoring. the photos are on my computer at home so it will be tonight before I can get to them. Apparently most people don't realize how the factory ones looked cause you never see them done correctly.

Here is what I have used in the past.

I just helped a friend do exhaust on his 39 chevy pckup (304 stainless) :beerbang and all we used was a chop saw with a abrasive blade and a stand mounted belt sander. It works great, and the guy I used to run around with (passed on to hot rod heaven) did custom exhaust for a business and thats all he ever used.

Thanks for the help, Guys! I'm trying to keep the tail pipes on the car as they are very long and are a little hard to handle.

Tommy, I do have the pictures of your tail pipe. I'm going to try and at least put the back cut on it. Not sure if I could get the flat edge put on it. I have the 2.5" tail pipes and they aren't bent exactly the same as the original 2" pipes but they are close.

I think I might try the cutter with the 4 wheels first. That might be perfect as I'm not sure if I could get a full turn with the pipe on the car.

The picture shows how long the pipes are. Not sure how far below the quarter the pipe should extend. I'm going to have more than a stock pipe just due to the increased size of the pipe. I now know why the factory never put 2.5" tail pipes on these!!

Ross,
those are too low and will definately get hit on something. i did 2-1/2 tailpipes as well. then i cut with a chain cutter, cleaned with a flie, and bought chrome covers.
