I saw Bob's process on the forum for priming a 409- I can use my same small block priming tool?
Just curious, why is it different from a small block?
Thanks,
Don
PS I have a 340 HP 63 409.

the w has differant oil passages and needs a w style primer. From what I hear on the board is you only get half the engine oiled. With the small block oiler. John

This is how I understand this, look at the picture I have attached! (start looking in the sump and at the oilpump).
When you spinn the pump the oil travels through the channel up and reaches the main bearing of the crank. Here there is a groove that makes it possible to get further up the engine and travel to the cam bearing. This is similar to what happens at the distributor.
What I mean is, if you whould take a smaller diameter crank ("smallblock primer") and put in place of the original crank the oil whould not be directed to the passage on the upper side and to travel further up the engine. It whould instead blead of to all other directions. :deal
Half the engine means one of the two top lifter gallies (left side) will get oil because it does have its own oil passage. The right bank has a oil channel that goes throug he distributor hole and should be directed by the groove in the dist casing/shaft. Your small block primer does not have the diameter or grove to direct the oil to the right side galley!
Hope I made this understandable to you...I did try my best :D

Thanks for the replies, after looking at them, I also did a search and found the answer.
