Can someone please tell me the bolt size and thread count for the bolt that holds the harmonic balancer on ? Thanks Bill

I believe those are heat pressed on, no bolt. (Like the older small block engines).

I could be wrong, I was wrong in 1978 twice.....:D

Hold on a minute, we are talking about 348's and 409's made from 1958 to around 1965 aren't we? The exploded view in the HOT ROD 348/409 book does not show a bolt or bolts holding the balancer on, it pressure fits the snout of the crank, then the pulley bolts to it. Cutaway view shows the same. What am I missing?

when your ready to put that balancer on, dont hit it on with a hammer, the shock will transmit into the crank and loosen your connecting rods nuts and when you least expect it, a nut will fall off your connecting rods and , kaboom

kiss your cylinder walls good bye

use the correct tool to draw the balancer on the crankshaft

Bob, The 348s I have seen do not have threaded crank snouts. The 409s I have seen do have threaded crank snouts. That does not mean " all" of either. Only what I have seen. In the olden days , it was common to use a 2x4 and BFH to install the balancers because there were no threaded crank snouts. Millions and millions were installed this way. A practice I would never do now, but there was a time when it was done. It is easy to drill a 348 crank when it is in the shop being turned, so no need to pound em on now. Hope this explains some.

all 409 cranks were drilled and tapped for a 7/16-20 bolt. 348s were not

Does that bolt only hold the balancer on, and then 3 bolts hold the pulley to the balancer, or can you use the same bolt for both?

Don

Thanks Ronnie and gearhead, since mine is an early 348, and the stuff I referenced is also early "W", you can see where I went wrong. I will have some fun with my mechanic friend today, when I pull this on him. I need to remember two words that will get you everytime, always and never.

You use the balancer bolt to hold both the pulley and the balancer. The pulley will not go on with the balancer bolt in the way.
