Im looking for a book for high performance mods for a 348 409. Id like to get something specificly with some head porting info. Where to grind, where not to grind. And all other info for performance use. This book is the only one Im coming across. Does it have what I need?

It is about the only good W book I know of but it really doesn`t get down to very much detail.

Just a bunch of reprints from the 60's and 70's car rags.

I had some time to kill tonight waiting for a friend....... I bought a book at Chapters that looks excellent. It has over 100 pages of 348 & 409 stuff....... looks very good although all I have done is thumb through it....... it looks like he might have gotten info from here even.

Dave,
Funny you should mention that book. I just saw one in Borders yesterday and picked it up. One section on a stock build on a 348 and another section on building a blown 409. I haven't read much yet. Just been looking at the pictures (since that's what I do best :rofl ).

I thought that it was a pretty decent book, and the flathead sections were also interesting. Plenty of part number references and photography. The other book was more of a snapshot of the early 60's, not as useful today.

I'd love to see someone do a comprehensive book on the W engine. It would be great to have one book that listed all the proper part numbers etc. for the guys wanting to do a good restoration. And it would also be good to have a section on performance building. And maybe a step by step rebuild that pointed out things to watch out for. And maybe even some history on the engine and the cars it came in. There's a few guys out there that could handle a project like that. I don't know if it would be profitable or not but I think most of us 348-409 owners would want a copy.

I just cam across that book on E-bay. I hadn't seen it before...

Boy did I get ripped....... I paid $32.98 for it at the bookstore the other day.
It is a pretty good book though and I would buy it again I think even for the extra $10 over Ebay price.
I've read the 348 & 409 sections and it has some pretty good stuff in it. Lots of actual GM part numbers, factory cam spec's etc. the stock 348 build did 251 HP @ 4000 RPM. The blown 409 with 333 heads did 485 HP @ 5500. There's also a good section on the big Lincoln 337 cu.in. flathead 145 HP @ 3600 from the factory, this one did 221 @ 4000 RPM and the little 136 cu. in. 60 HP flathead did 145 @5500.
