Hey guys...
We need your help. Last nite Bob scored a 409 engine for use his '62 SS. And we are trying to figure out just exactly what it is.
The story we got was that it was removed from a '63 Chevy boom truck about 15 years ago and stored inside a building. It appears to be fairly complete, but it has been converted to a 2BBL with a homade adapter plate on the intake. It has the big truck water pump on it and 348 exhaust manifolds. It still has the engine oil in it. The guy that had it said it ran great & didn't smoke when he pulled it. But that's about all he knows about it. The part number on the block is: 3844422. The intake is # 3830831. The heads are # 3830817. The Julian date code on the heads are 316 & 286. Can someone decipher this?
There is no suffix code on the block. It's just a plain blank pad with no numbers on it
We are trying to determine if this was a crate replacement passenger car 409engine that was fitted for use in the truck... or what is it ?

Jens, It has passenger car heads and intake manifold. It was obviously used in a truck. You would have to pull a head to know if it is a truck block or passenger car block. A clue would be if the right side bosses are drilled and tapped in front of the block. Since it was used in a truck, they probably are so to be sure I'm afraid you must pull a head. Either way , it is a great find. Congrats..........:)

Didn't the 348 have that adapter with 2 bl stock?? The one I retreived from a early 60s grain truck has that same thing. How do they run set up that way for cruising? What carb bolts to the intake otherwise? Mine also had what was left of a chrome air cleaner. I thought i had a 409 untill I got it on my trailer and checked the casting #s on the back. I thought it was all stock untill I looked at the cam soft plug in the back and it had some silicone wiped around it. A small part of me still wants to put it in my 62 ss with the 283. ????

Jens-

Either way, it is a 1964 409 with 817 heads. It will still look and run great in the 62 SS.

286 = Oct 12 (if 64 year, Oct 13 if not))
316 = Nov 11 (if 64 year, Nov 12 if not)

The stamped ID on the front pad of the engine will tell you its original use if it still exist.

LOOK AT THE CRANKSHAFT FLANGE AND SEE IF ITS A 409 OR THE 348, VERY EASY TO DO, USUALLY BLOCKS WITH NO STAMPING ON THE PAD ARE SERVICE REPLACEMENTS.:coffee:
