Mechanic from my work says his buddy pulled an original 425hp 409 from his boat. Supposed to be all original except the exhaust manifolds. Runs good and he wants $2500 for it. Should I bother chasing after it after checking out the numbers?

Just want to mention that the marine engines were only rated at 280hp so if it does have a 425hp, it was added and not original to the boat.

You guys are argueing about the HP rateing, if it has 2 4's and is a 409 and running why in the world would it not be worth 2500 dollars? Roy

Simply because having 2-4's doesn't make it worth $2,500. It could be a truck engine or even the marine 409 with a 2X4 intake sitting on it. In my book $2,500 for something like that isn't a deal at all. On the other hand, if it really is a 425hp 409, that is a high performance engine and worth more than $2,500. Not all 409's are as valuable or desirable as others. The 62 409/409, 63-65 400hp, and 63-64 425hp are the ones that fetch the big bucks. Marine and truck engines are low on the totum pole.

I'll tell you around here if it is a 409 and has 2 4's even if it is a truck motor, they think it is worth a fortune. They have a swap meet in Springfield every Sept. and 2 years ago there was a complete 340hp motor, they wanted 3000 dollars for it. It was a used motor that was free turning but needed rebuilt. I guess I don't live in the right part of the country. Roy:(

I attended a swap meet in Jefferson, WI last weekend and came across a guy with two 09s one complete 340hp and one 425hp. The 425hp was just a shortblock and he wanted $2500! he wanted $3000 for the complete 340hp! I kept walking.

Remember though, what they want isn't always what they get! ;)

Just like those high price junkers that you see at the shows. Most of them go home with the owner.
