Looking at Doug Marion's 348 engine chart on page 40 of the latest Super Chevy mag., there are 11 different 348s listed. The 265 and 300 horsepower versions are a mystery to me. Judging from the chart's specs the 348/265 is a 250 horse with the 315 horse solid lifter camshaft. The 348/300 also appears to be similar to the 348/265 except it, along with the solid lifter cam, has 11.00 pistons instead of the 9.50. You could also say the 348/300 is the 315 horse with a 250 horse iron intake and WCFB carb replacing the 315 horse's 3 X 2bbl carbs.

According to Alan Colvin's book CHEVROLET by the NUMBERS there are no records of these two engines (348/265 & 348/300). In fact Mr. Colvin singles out the 348/265 and indicates there is not any record of such an engine being built.

I have seen Chevrolet's Tonawanda Engine plant's 348 production records. There are no 348/265 or 348/300 engines listed.

On the other hand my early (printed in late 1958) 1959 consumer brochure shows only two solid lifter high-performance 348 engines. The 300 horsepower with a 4-bbl carb ???? and the 315 horsepower with 3 x 2bbl. carbs.

On a separate note, in my opinion the Super Chevy chart's listing of the 348/305 with hyd. lifters and 11.00 pistons is incorrect. The hyd. lifter 348/305 was a 1961 engine only and unlike the other early 305 348s, used the standard 9.50 compression shortblock. This engine was the base 348 for the 1961 Super Sport. Some of the 1961 348/305s also didn't have an aluminum intake.

Rick,
You are correct, the '61 305 hp motor was basicly a 250 hp that was allowed to breathe, they had the 1147 heads, 2.5" exhaust manifolds, taller intake and a AFB. Mine has the cast iron intake.

Rick Whats interesting to note is the 1960 305hp was rated at 5600rpm, and the 1961 305hp was rated at 5200rpm due i suppose to the larger 4-throat carb, valves etc.:coffee:

The only 1960 348/305 (RPO 576, suffix code GD) had a hi-performance solid lifter camshaft and an AFB carb., was only avaiable with a Powerglide trans. It is not listed in the Super Chevy Chart. The camshaft is probably most responsible for the rpm the horsepower peaked at.
