So I guess from previous posts (bubble top 1961) the 379 heads can work just fine with bigger valves for a stroker engine. My 348 block after magged and cleaned up. Honed only, no decking is a standard block. I would really like to use these and not have to buy 333 or 817 heads. Also, will the 379 heads work ok with the offy 2x4 setup and Aubrey's single 4bbl intake? Thanks for the input, Kent

379's are very similar to the 817 heads except that most of them, or maybe all of them have smaller valves. I think the 379's ports are just a little smaller but they're basically the same. Some of the guys here have made really good power with 379 heads. Here's the post from Bubbletop... http://www.348-409.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12860&highlight=flow He got enough flow out of the small port heads to make 450hp with the right engine. I'll do some searches and try to come up with some examples of engine combinations that have worked well as I continue the 348 build post.
There are three basic head configurations for the W engine...
1... The regular small port or low perf heads. These heads have a bunch of different part numbers and they're found on all 348's and any 409 with less than 380hp.
Any of the factory intakes from these engines will interchange or you can also use the Offy dual quad, Aubrey's new intake, Edelbrocks new dual quad for small port heads or almost any of the early multi carb setups for W engines.
2... High perf heads. These have casting numbers that end with either 690 or 583 and they were used on all 409's with 380 or more horsepower. (the exception to this rule is the Z-11 engine)
There aren't a lot of aftermarket intake choices for these engines. The Mickey Thompson cross ram is good, but it's also rare. Lamar Walden sells some that are made by Rich Rogeski (I think I've got Rich's last name spelled wrong) But these are low production race oriented intakes so they're pretty expensive. Then you've got the new Edelbrock for large ports that should be out any day now and the new single plane intake for large ports that Aubrey's working on.
3... Z-11 style raised port heads. These heads are super rare and take an intake manifold that's totally different again.

see my pics elsewhere that show a old offy 2X4 bolted on my new stroker 348 with 379 heads I used edlebrock small block linkage with about a 1 in spacer in the linkage between the edelbrock carbs. NOT IN CAR YET---BUT SOON!!
