Does anyone know the correct aluminum Bell housing for a 1960 Impala with 348-4spd? show cars book indicates it would be a 553, but I have a Hollander which implies that something else came from factory by saying the 553 will interchange...but it does not give a casting number for the 1960 application...a friend asked me to look in my references, and I don't want to tell him wrong...Thanks

The difference between the 553 and this bellhousing is the size ofthe clutch arm opening.

Gearhead,
I think you are right....I don't know about '60's but the '61 250 and 280 motors used the cast iron bellhousing while the 305 and up used the aluminum housings. I supect the '60 and '61 were the same.

i would think the 60s were the same way. i have seen alot of 250hp 348s with a cast iron bell. i have a 280hp 61 348 it has a cast iron bell. 62 did the same thing. alum bell housings on the hipo engines only.
