View Full Version : Off-set heads for valve clearance, who's done it?

I've been discussing heads with Bob Walla. :deal

He mentioned that some here may have done an off-set head trick for exhaust valve clearance.

My problem is that I want to use large valves with a 348 block.
Since the bore is smaller, the cylinder wall cuts close to the valve.

I don't want to just bore the block for more room, I may want to bore the engine again some day.

Has anyone here done the off-set head trick?
Used on a street car?
How did it hold up, what special mods were needed beyond narrowing the intake? :dunno

I do have a milling machine, so I should be able to handle whatever is needed.

Just notch the cylinder for clearance. Not a big deal.

I thought someone had fitted a set of 690's onto a 348 and there was no issues???

I'm looking at 2.125 intake, 1.625 ex. or 2.250 int, 1.880 ex.

I will try to get a head off the block and some mock valves made to see how much additional room I need.

I'm no expert....... and we have no real data yet....... but I think that a good set of aluminum heads with 2.19's will out flow any intake available........ I know Aubrey has probably a good one coming but again if you can flow 300 CFM through existing heads going a little bigger on the valves is going to cost to much for what you'll get. 300 CFM should support 650 to 700 HP. Spend the money in some titanium valves and other super light weight stuff........

Just my opinion........

The smaller ones are even a good price at only $60.00 each.

If I do go TI I'm looking at $4K-$4.5K for the heads. :deal
If I succeed in getting the "Latham" blower I want, max head-flow will help to prevent "stall" and make the maximum possible power.

I have not taken my engine apart yet, I wanted to wait until I could actually begin working on it.
So far I'm still collecting parts and information. :scratch
