I was thinking today that I've got quite a few small-block parts lying around. Everything except a block pretty much. We bought a '68 full-sized L30 (1x4 4-bbl 327, hydraulic camshaft, Quadrajet) complete intake-to-pan (no carb) about a decade ago. It was a Florida motor that had been moved to Michigan with the freeze plugs siliconed in and pure water in the block. The water jacket on the driver's side has a six inch long crack along the top and is pushed out about a half inch.
This summer we had the heads rebuilt and used them on my '68 Camaro when I hot rodded it but everything else is sitting on shelves in the garage - large journal crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons (one with a broken skirt), oil pan, timing cover, etc. So are the old 1.60 heads and 2-bbl intake off my 327. Last year I bought a brand-new Offenhauser 3x2 intake for my Camaro and I've been gathering 2GCs with the intention of building my own tripower on the cheap.
My Camaro runs so sweet at the moment, though, that I'm almost afraid to screw it up. So I was thinking that maybe it would be neat just to build up a complete new 327 using a used 350 block (large-journal 327 cranks fit in those, right?) and the ideal cam for a tripower setup. If I choose never to swap it in the Camaro I could always just find an old Saginaw 4-speed and build a '32 Ford or something around it, right?
So, what would you do? Think: CHEAP.
