I started jigging and laying out the "new" headers. I got the right side done last night. I've got to be out of the shop for the next week. I built these out of 1 7/8" primaries to see if they'll fit. The original one were 1 3/4". I also rolled the collector a little. It looked like the old set ran into some ground clearance issues. Maybe someone on here can answer, T what angle dose the engine sit front to back?
Thanks,
Jerod.

Jerod

The road rash on the collector was from higher speed road driving years ago and hitting some bumps causing the car to bottom. That would probably not be an issue today. Most are either 1/4 cars, or driven slower as daily drivers.

When the collector hit the pavement, it went up and contacted the inner fender. If the collector were located rearward, it would have better clearance. I think it would have to be at least an inch farther back.

If I were to use a clinometer on the valve cover, would that give you the angle you need?

Yes, I just want to make sure the collector is square to the ground.
Thanks

I am looking forward to the 1 7/8" header. It has been said many times that I needed the 1 7/8" to replace the 1 3/4 Tri Ys I am running now. This is just the ticket for me. Maybe I can break into the 11s! :cheers

My son got out his digital clinometer. The car was level, checked at the drivers door. Engine measured on top the valve cover was 4.5 degrees.

Attached are pictures of headers by Fred Totten. These are 2 in. headers that Fred had made. Don;t remember how many sets he had made, but I passed on a set when they were available. Terrible mistake on my part. Our member -- somis62-- has offered to take his off of his car if someone would be interested in reproducing them. A very generous offer. Maybe Jarod Jardine would be interested. Bob Walker Jr. could do the job, but Bob probably doenst have the time to invest in such a project. somis62 says that mini starter is required and spin on filter. Don't know what else to add. Do you guys think this to be a good idea? Would welcome some input and opinions.

I think it's a great idea! :clap I would like to see Bob do it, I know he's very busy but I also know they would get the attention of a perfectionist.

That is generous of you Ronnie. Ron, 64ss409 has shipped us a set of our originall ones. I've got them jigged up and one side tacked together in 1 7/8". Our plan is to produce them in three sizes, 1 3/4", 1 7/8", and 2" - 2 1/8" step.
The set that I'm jigging from that ron supplied are 1 3/4" so we need to make sure the bigger sizes will fit the cars built out of the same jig.
Thanks
Jerod.

Jarod, My post was only to relay for somis62. He was having problems loading pictures. If you are interested in his offer,, maybe you could P.M. " somis62 " with a phone number and you and he could discuss the possiblities. I sure hope so. I would be interested in 2 sets.

Is it possible to have a 2" diameter set of headers that will fit a 348 / 409 in an X frame car without having to cut / bend the wheel house, and exit straight out toward the rear of the car ( like stahl's ), with a collector ?

For street / strip use.

Just wondering. I sure would like to have a set.:brow

Jerod.......... I hope all is well with your wife.

most likely they'll exit towards the side of the car. The fenderwells shouldn't be in the way and won't require any "adjustments". If you look at the pictures in the first post I think you'll see how they exit the car.

61,
Look at the pics Ronnie kindly posted for me in thread 14. Both sides exit just behind aft lower control arm mount and turn out, just like stock exhaust.

If they exit towards the side I'm guessing a mandrel 45 or 90 connected to get the exhaust flowing back again will do.

we'll probably supply the bends as a street hookup.

Let's not lose this idea. Fred had the jigs for these headers in his garage in Middletown Oh. Does anyone that was at his house when he passed know what happened to them?

Ray, I don't remember seeing them at the house. I thought Dean had the jigs in California.I'll check with John. They really seemed like a good design. Dean was pretty specific about what needed to be done to make them work. I'm sure Jared knows all those angles too. Bob

Fred told me that the jigs were in his garage. I did not look in the garage when we were there, I wanted to but didn't. I wish I would have mentioned it now :doh
