Picked up these 333 heads. Was hoping some of the guru's could tell me what the other casting no.s mean. One has the numbers 264 on it and the other has 18. Both heads also have the casting letters CFD. From reading all the posts I get the idea that these are a better starting point than the 379 heads? I have a set of those also. Thanks, Kent

Those two and three digit numbers represent what are referred to as "Julian date codes". They run from 1 to 365 (I guess) and represent the day of the year starting with January 1. So an "18" would mean January 18th, "365" would be December 31, and so on in between. This doesn't give you any clue as to what year (could be a range of years 1962, 1963, etc.). That doesn't matter as they are pretty much all the same (as far as I know).

The heads can accept larger valves, and offer better potential than most think :). See the various threads on building 348s and 409s using the 333 heads.

Hope that helps some, good luck with your project!

Best,
TomK

Thanks Tom for the insight. Any idea about the CFD Casting?

That's "Central Foundary Division", isn't it? Where they were cast (as opposed to the Tonowanda plant. I am pretty sure, but others here may want to back that up or explain further.
