As a new member of only a few days, you guys have taught me alot, I thought I was pretty good at knowing 348-409 parts, but now I'm not sure.
I have a bid on a 656 409 Truck Engine on eBay. I wanted to build a street motor fo my 55' Sedan. Am I making a mistake trying for this motor?
Thanks,
Dwight

Dwight, If you are planning to install without rebuild,,, very low compression and not a very spirited engine. If you plan on a rebuild, go for it. The skys the limit. Potential to be anything you want. #656 truck block is a great starting point.

Yes, as Ronnie says. The truck block can be built to a high end performance engine very easily. It shares the same crank, rods and basicly the same sheet metal as the passenger car engine. With the right pistons a good camshaft and a set of HP heads you will be pleased with the end results. I run a truck block in my 60 Impala.

Thanks,
If I win the bid, I plan on doing a rebuild.
Thanks again,
Dwight

Dwight:

Is this the engine you are bidding on:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1963-Chevy-409-V8-engine-motor-RUNS_W0QQitemZ300238355748QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item 300238355748&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1308

If you are planning on using this as a basis, and you decide to build a more "budget-conscious" engine, you might look at some of the threads crafted by one of our own, (JimSS409) portraying a range of builds from 300 to 400 plus horses, all based on the truck block.

http://www.348-409.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12281&highlight=409+truck+builds

Good luck in your quest! Once you purchase the "starter kit" for the 409, let us know and ask lots of questions.

Best,
TomK

Dwight, Not that I'm Pushing it, well, yeah I am, but I have mine in the for sale section. The engine you are bidding on is starting almost nine hundred more than I paid for my base. Unless you have your own machine shop you might check and see what I've spent and what you get. I'm not making a profit on mine. JMO

Ray,

I checked your Engine for "For Sale",you definitely have a nice setup, I bid on the eBay engine before I found the "For Sale" on this site. I put my 61'348 and Tripower setup on eBay before joining this site also. I am not bidding any further on the eBay Truck engine. I am at my max bid and in the lead with 2 days to go, but expect to be outbid. My items end Wednesday 7/9, I'm interested in your engine. You're right, I do not own a machine shop, all of that would have to be farmed out.

Ray's right. Get out of that auction. That engine is about 35 miles from me and I dropped out on the second day. :rofl Ray's engine is a good deal and it's from someone you know will be around.

Dwight, I'm going to have to agree with Dick on this one. Retract your bid and get the hell out of there....

I received your eMail, I will call you today. I'm not bidding any futher on eBay engine as Dick mentioned, I'm still high bidder w/2 Days to go but the $1550.00 is my max and I should be outbid ( I HOPE!). Also, having a problem on eBay with a bidder who wants to retract the high bid on my TriPower, I'm learning quick.
