I have a 64 409 340 hp pass engine that i need an oil pan for .I have been trying to find the correct pan for my 409 the one with the dip stick on the right side and with the oil plug facing forward not down like the truck pan . I have come across a couple of 409 truck pans for sale . If i use a truck pan that has a windagetray installed in it will i have to remove the windagetray that bolts on my engine for it to fit ? :dunno

You are correct, the windage tray will not fit with a truck oil pan. I also have a 340 HP car pan (drain plug on the front) with the large baffle (same as the truck pan) so the windage tray won't fit with it either. I don't believe the 340 HP engine had a windage tray.
Someone with more knowlege will confirm.

Hey Phil,
Being that you've been selling 409 stuff for so many years and have every part number in your head.........
I recieved an email from a member who has a 409/425 crate engine he's had for over 20 years. It has a truck oil pan on it and it came like that from GM.
I have (2) 340 HP pans & (4) truck pans. None will fit over the windage tray because of the large baffle.
Did they make a 409 truck pan without the large baffle??????
Thanks Phil.

Here's the baffle that's in all of my oil pans.

John- So I don't hijack this thread, See http://www.348-409.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14121 for the complete story.
Nothing severe for bodily injury, just banged up and a pinched nerve. Car will be fixed, just waiting on the insurance appraiser before i can start on it.

I only have one 340HP oil pan and it is on an engine that is setting on the floor. And I don't have the space and engine stand to put it on. But the 340HP and truck pan baffles are very similar. Neither one will bolt onto a block with the windage tray and studs.
The 425HP pan has the baffle installed lower in the sump to clear the windage tray.
Hope this helps!!
How come when you spell it B A F F L E...it's pronounced baffle.
BUT if you spell it W A F F L E....it's pronounced waffle????:scratch:scratch:scratch:dunno:dunno

Why not? Just take it to Jiffy Lube for oil changes 'cause they won't know the difference about the location of the plug:D:D

I have a truck pan (came on a late 348) that had NO baffle at all; perhaps it was removed, if so it was done very nicely. Anyway, made for a nice fit for the windage tray and studs. No trimming, easy to clean out, etc. It's currently on my 348 stroker after some body work on the sump. Why is it these guys drop the engines from 3 feet or so and mangle the pan?

More likely that someone picked the whole damm car up with a floor jack under the oil pan :doh

When I read this thread a while back, I could have sworn we didn't modify the baffle in the truck pan we are using. Since the engine was out I just had to check as its been bugging me. As you can see I am running the stock truck pan and have the windage tray installed also. The holes for the dipstick tube line up fine, and there is no clearance issue. Since most of you guys have forgotten more than I know about 409's, what gives? Could the reason I am not having clearance issues be that I have main studs instead of bolts?
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Dan: I think the reason you're not having clearance problems, with the windage tray and baffle. I may be wrong, but from your picture, the studs that you are using look shorter than regular 409 studs. Is that possible?:dunno Skip:)

Skip,
Here's a better picture of the studs. I knew I had a real good closeup....just had to find which disc it was on. It looks to me like the main studs were machined down and threaded to a smaller diameter. Using a nut above and below the windage tray, you could set it at any height desired. Wha-da-ya-know I think I just answered my own question. :rofl
