OK now that I have a 409 on its way. I need some help on my rear end. I am planning on using Jim's truck 409 build idea for 350hp. The rear end in my car does not have a tag on it to identify the gear ratio, however the housing looks like a ford 9" it is a 10 bolt on the yoke side with GM 3725899 I did not get the date stamp to much caked up dirt and it is still in the car.
However for poking around on the Internet it may be a Hotchkiss style 8.2" 10 bolt used in '55-'64 full size Chevies.
I guess I am trying to decide if the rear end is worth keeping or do I need to start to look for something else. I just have not had a lot of luck on finding info on it so I want to be sure that it can hold up to what I am trying to do.
Thanks

I don't think it is a ford the gear housing has GM with the number listed above stamped into it, unless you can put a GM in a ford (round hole square peg). I will see if i can get some good pictures and all the numbers but I have to squeeze my self in there to look. Not a critical thing right now since I am still taking the car apart. I am just trying to plan and budget. Only so much I the wife lets me buy on credit :takethat
So here are some links that I think cover my question

So on to the gear ratio.

If you don't want to remove it, clean the passenger side of the hogs head really good with brake cleaner or something similar. There will be two letters followed by some numbers stamped in it. This will tell you what came in it from the factory. The letters are the manufacturer of the ring and pinion and the numbers can be cross referenced to the ratio.

unless your just going to drive grandma to church with the 409 go with a 9 inch rear, easy gear changes and if set up with good parts will last a very long time, I have never been disapointed in mine

My Grandma has NEVER been in my 62 and niether has a 9 inch !!!:takethat
With a little work your stock GM rear can be made to hold up to the 409 !!
If running a auto you can do it fairly cheap and go with Aubreys bearing girdles and aftermarket axles.
A four speed car should go to the next level and get Aubreys complete rear up-grade.:D

A Grandma in my 62' not a option. I have a t10 4 speed currently in the car. So I will up grade the gears when I get to that point. Thanks for the input I am sure that as I move forward on this I will have more questions.
On a side note I just got the call from the shipping CO. My engine is at the dock. So I will go down tomorrow and retrieve it and take it to its new home.
