Well, I am finally down to getting the hood ready for paint. I am starting with the bottomside, cleaning and prepping for paint. I have failed to order the insulation kit in advance of this stage, so this leads to my question.
How does the hood insulation fit on a '61? I want the hood to look really nice, but on the other hand I don't want to spend lots of time unnecessarily in areas that will get covered with insulation. Does it lay over the lip on the bracing? Can anyone please post pictures of their insulated hood? I would like to see all areas that get covered.
Any recommendation as to where, or where not to get the insulation kit?
What is the best way to attach it to the hood?

Danny-

The insulation will fit in between the braces. I used 3M Super Heavy Duty Spray Trim Adhesive from the local auto parts store to put mine on.

I just got this complete as well.

My tips (and I didn't learn the hard way this time!!!):

1. Take the time to mask off areas where you don't want the adhesive to go. Overspray on WD-40 is one thing, this stuff is a whole new ball game. It will drip and run if you get carried away.

2. I used a hand drywall sander (minus the sandpaper) to firmly press the insulation on, placing it in different areas every 30 seconds or so.

After about 2 or 3 weeks, if it doesn't fall off, then it worked!

Ok. Maybe a dumb question, but why would anyone want to put insulation back on the bottom side of a hood ? Is it all about engine noise ?:dunno

It's used as a sound barrier and it keeps heat from transferring through the hood. Brian and Omaha give very good advice but my experience with the 61s is the front piece of insulation usually ends up destroyed by air movement. The 61 I'm working on now has the underside of the hood detailed and painted the same quality as the exterior. Ive decided not to install insulation, I want to hear the motor and those carbs opening up.
The new BMW has a device that transfers engine sound to into the passager compartment and can be turned on or off like a radio. A solid lifter 409 surely sounds better than a Bimmer. Larry

I am still debating whether or not to insulate.
Might actually look cleaner without the insulation....just shiny
body color paint to match the inner fenders and rad support.

I'm with you 61BISCAYNE. The under hood insulation, always looks out of place, and added on. :doh That's just my opinion. That's why I never put it on my 64. I have seen plexiglass mirrors, cut to shape and installed. They look pretty good, but only, if the engine compartment is finished off.:clap Skip:clap

If you do not use the insulation , and want to clean up the bottom of the hood
make sure you get all the old insulation from around the edges of the braces
look at the bottom of my hood
I did not get it all that clean, and now it shows a little
I have been thinking of either redoing the bottom, or installing mirrow plex to the bottom

just my opinion

have a good week

:rofl:rofl Thats like the first metric bikes that copied the Harley engine V-twins.
They used an electronic gizmo to cut out each cylinder to give the engine the Harley THUMP !!!!:rofl:doh:rofl

Well, I decided to go with the clean look....no insulation.
I am very pleased with the results!:brow
It was getting pretty dark when I took these pics, so they are not too great.

That's what I did, painted the underside of the hood same color as the inner fenders (a bit too shiny, but looks OK). No insulation. Works for me!

"It's used as a sound barrier and it keeps heat from transferring through the hood"

I think it was mostly a sound barrier, the '61 convertibles did not have the hood insulation. I guess as noisey as the convertibles were back then the factory figured it was a waste of time and money to put the insulation in.
