Actually factory on some cars, like the Devin SS!
I seem to recall the same for at least one version or Crosley cars?
When the engine compartment is REALLY tight, you put the generator anywhere you can.

I've seen similar set ups( just to clean up the engine compartment) But never one that close to the muffler. The extra heat on that alt. could be a problem although that car dosn't look like it's got to many miles on it if any at all

The NASCAR guys can get away with it because they're [most] always at speed. Doesn't work so well for a street car that sees stop-and-go traffic and in-town driving, though; won't spin the alternator fast enough at low speed or at all when stopped.

Hummmm,,, How about setting it up with a gear drive off the flex/pressure plate?

Probably take a pretty big gear to keep from spinning the alternator to death!
