has anyone seen the new m.s.d. ignition, it allowes you to use your stock points dist. But makes big fire power to the plugs without harming the points.., infact m.s.d. claims there new system adds life to points, has anyone seen this yet ? what do you think ?

Yeah Bob, the MSD unit is pretty neat. Have you seen the new "Vertex" Elctronic "Mag" look-alikes? Cool stuff:cool:
Bit pricey though...

Any 6 series MSD box can be triggered by points, thru the white wire. If this "new" MSD unit isn't one of their multi-spark discharge setups, like a 6 box, then it just plain isn't worth it. The 6 series boxes do take the loading to the points down considerably, and that makes for low voltage and amperage through the points, long life. But, if you want a good MSD setup, you will remove the points as a matter of course, using the correct MSD magnetic pickup, and not the points.
As far as the Taylor mag look-alike setup is concerned, to date, from 20+ sources I hear from, one being Blair's Speed Shop, in Pasadena, Ca., 65 percent failure rate on 'em. Blair's has been in the same location for just over 55 years, and have had ALL 9 of these mag look-alike dists they have sold so far, fail. Phil also reports speaking with quite a few other speed shop people, they won't carry and/or sell them either. The electronics inside are epoxy coil, not the best way to do it, and a basic PerTronix built module/magnetic pickup. They ain't very reliable, and only make low spark levels, gimmick dist.

Just info, nothing more, but...lots more than just Phil at Blair's is irritated at Vertex about those fakey mags.
I've done a few real mags, dead ones, into either HEI or MSD trigger, and it makes a nice setup, but, can't do one with the coil wire inside the cap like it is on the real mag and clone. Issue is, the charging magnets on the real mags is in the way of routing the coil wire out of the bottom of the mag, so...I modify a stock cap to take a coil wire on the top of the cap. I'm in the process of seeing about mainshafts that don't have the charging magnets. This whole thing is, don't waste a good, read expensive, charging magnet set to convert a mag. A new shaft without the magnets would make life a lot easier to put an MSD 6A, 6AL or BTM, or an HEI module in place with the mag as a trigger.
Anyway, Taylor has issues with the clone dists, pricing for one, reliability the most important one. I see from the attachment, the pricing has come down from the $599.99 to what, $449.99. Still, not a good deal for what you end up having to live with. And, it really isn't HEI level spark output they make.
