Does anyone know what the black '64 409 convertible sold for???
I watched the auction on and off, but there were way too many commercials for me to endure... Speed channel expected that car to bring $ 50-60K...

I clicked on the weblink that Grumpy provided..
$ 80K???? Even after the seller shelling out major league commission $$$, that is still an outstanding sum of money for any '64.
I mean , not even an L-78 , Bloomington GOLD certified, 1964 Fuelly Corvette Coupe would fetch that much...., or would it????
BTW....I didnt think that the dual-quad cars could be had with factory A/C, or am I wrong on that??? I mean, it doesnt matter to me if the builder took the Harrison pieces out of another parts car and put them in. Im just wondering if it could have been had from the factory that way.
2) The '65 409 car that sold for $69K really struck me too...
I just cant believe the money that is changing hands on these cars!!!!!!!!
Rockfish

According to my 63 salesman guide none of the 409s could be had with AC, although I seem to remember the 340HP had it.

The black 64 340 hp Convertible sold for $52,000.00

Rockfish: that 1964 Bloomington gold L-78 Corvette would have brought that or better, if it was certified!. The L-78 didn't come out until 1965.
You guys are right the solid lifter motors turned too high an RPM so Chevy only offered it with the 340 hp.

Phil, I believe that convert was a `56,,,,,
Watched hours of the auction and those idiots that spend,,,excuse me,,,,,,,OVER bid on these cars have so much new money they don`t understand or care how much the true value of ANY car is.
It is just,,, "I have too much money and I want that car" !!
Most also buy these cars for all the wrong reasons !!
Shoot !! I watched one guy buy three cars in a row at over $600,000 !!!!
I think it is sad that this is happening,,,,,,,
Very few of the bidders are REAL car guys IMO,,,,,dq

Grumpy,
I see in your signature that you feel the HD front springs are a mistake. What pt. # and mfr. are they. Why dont you like? I have new springs for the 61 ragtop w/ 348. Perfect Circle 6004S, same as small block w/ air. Havnt installed yet. Should I go w/the small block w/o air spring?

Mistake was made 40 years ago. I installed what I was told was 409 station wagon air conditioned springs. Car drove with nose in the air. Great weight transfer but handled terrible a high speeds (like over 60 MPH).
Remember this was my daily driver at the time.

these guys bidding have way to much money. i would rather build it my self . its all about satisfaction !!! i could care less about going out and buying a 100,000 dollar car . but it would be nice . lets face it we don,t have it like that. if i did'nt do most of the work myself i would never be able to restore anything.

Hey Fran, Thanks for the info... I didnt think that a 425 hp car came with factory A/C.
I hope that we're not confusing 327s with 396's. I dont have my Corvette books handy, but I was trying to refer to the fuel injected, mechanical cam 327... I may have L-78 and L-79 mixed up though... My '64 Coupe had an L-76... Same engine below the intake as Corvette's top performing fuelly small block from 1962-1965, except that it was carburated.
If you were referring to the 396, Youre right, the first year for big block 396 Vette was indeed '65
It seems like 1965 was a year of firsts and lasts for Impala and Corvette both.

Yes Rockfish, the L-79 was injected and the L-76 was a 365 hp carb version. And 1965 was a unique year, MANY firsts, and the Impala of course gained the 396 and lost the 409. Corvette got disc brakes, had the big block, and fuel injected small block, and our favorite Corvette option SIDEMOUNTS!. The Corvair was completely re-designed, gained the 140 hp motor. You could get a Nova with a 327! (few were sold, 283's were common). The Chevelle had the 350hp/327 and a VERY few 396's. What a year!.

Actually the L-79 was the carburated 350hp 327. (365hp also carb) I'm not sure what the RPO was for the injected engines.

I spoke with a friend this morning that knew that '38 Lincoln Zephyr that went for $400K. That car was a former Ridler award winner with over $2Mil invested. The seller took a $1.6 Mil loss. Suddenly it sounds like a bargain:rolleyes:

Now that`s rediculous !!
How can you justify spending 2 million on a car ?
And how can they justify charging that to build one car ?
Again,,,It shows just how these guys have so much money that it affects their thinking !!!
It is one nice ride,,,, but I don`t care how nice it is ,,,, you could never show me that it is worth or costs that much to build one car !!
The guy that built Newmad spent about that also and I think he got ripped off too !!
Shoot for that much,,,,, we could pool our money and have every car here finished and showable !!
Now,,,the question is,,,,,,,,, Is he ever going to have the balls to drive it !!,,,,
I`ll thake my worn paint, interior, trimmed `62, Thank you very much !!,,dq
