In my "Gen - U - ine" Chevy parts book, numerous references are made to "early design" 1961 409 engines as well as "late design" 61 409 engines.

Based on the parts referenced, it seems as if the late design 61 409 used the large port heads, etc.

Comments please???

Service package released just prior to Indy Nationals in 61 was the HP heads and dual 4 bbl intake. I'm pretty sure you had to have a name to get them. There had to be enough to satisfy NHRA.
