Hey guys!!! Does anyone know of a cheap way to put disks on the front of my 62 Bel Air? like maybe off of some other car? I was looking at the spindle and brakes on the front of a 74 corvette and the spindle looked the same with the inverted lower ball joint, I understand the front spindles are the same on corvettes from like 64-82 or so, do you guys think that might work?? any other suggestions??? Thanks!!!

Gus. If nobody knows here try that question, or even do a site search on Chevy Talk 58 to 64. I recall somebody figured out what was needed and posted it there a year or two back. http://www.chevytalk.org/threads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=UBB13

Haven't done it but 65-82 Vette does work. Some have smaller mounting holes that have to be drilled out. But if you price the calipers on these Vette systems you'll probably think twice about going this route. And Vette calipers can be a problem if not used regularly, unless lined with stainless.
I am TOTALLY satisfied with my system. I put metallic brake shoes on my 63 SS and added a brake booster. You have more swept area than discs and it stops even if shoes get wet. And when I broke them in as per the instructions the brakes got smokin' hot and I still had stopping power; brake fade being the main gremlin of standard drum brakes. But I understand the mindset, everybody just gotta have discs!

Hey guys!!! I recently converted the front drums on my chevelle with disks from a 72 chevelle, the drums were in good conition but MAN what a difference the disks were!!!! I was also thinking if the corvette spindles interchange that maybe it would be possible to use a different caliper like say a 2wd chevy pickup or maybe a mid 70s caprice or Impala?? I don't know if this is possible though. I know of a good hillbilly salvage yard I can get stuff CHEAP!!! except I don't ever remember any Vettes out there.

Ya but there wouldn't be as much difference with the Impala because they have pretty big drums, 11" I think, where the Chevelles were more like 9" or so. The last Chevelle I had stoped about as well as a fully loaded gravel truck where the last two Impalas I had stoped pretty well. Still, I changed over to discs and I'm sure they will be beter than the drums were.
