Hey guys!!! did a 58-64 ever come with a small block and duel quads?? If so what did they use for an air cleaner??? what did they look like??? Also what does a 409 duel quad air cleaner look like??? everytime you see a picture of the motor the air cleaner is removed. I am thinking of putting an edelbrock 2 4bl intake with 2 carters on my 62 with a small block and it woud be cool if I could use an originall style air cleaner instead of some dorky billit thing. Thanks for your help!!!:cheers

Just look at my avitar and you will see an original 63 dual 4bbl air cleaner. I'm thinking the 59 could be had with the small block and dual 4 bbls. Don't think I ever saw a 58, but that would be silly to think they were available in 59 and not 58. Think 59 was the last year for fuel injection SBC in passenger car. This is all thinking a long time ago, so I make no bets on any of this. Just my thinking.
BTW, the air cleaner you are looking at in my avitar is for a 409 with dual 4 bbls. The SBC had different carbs and spacing. The SBC dual 4s had a smaller cleaner. The 57 had the bat wing cleaner. Not sure about later. The Vette had a smaller cleaner. Thinking it was used on the later passenger cars.

No dual quads used with small block from 58 on except for the Corvette, which continued there use until the 62 model, when the 327 replaced the 283--then no 2X4s were offered.
The use of a factory air cleaner on aftermarket 2X4 system would be dependant on the spacing of the carbs. The Corvette dual quad air cleaner is a flat, round affair with louvers for air intake.

I had a very strong 327 in a '57 Belair hardtop some years ago. Put a '58 Corvette dual quad set up on it and ran the cool reproduction '57 Corvette air cleaners on it. Separate polished stainless round units with louvres on the sides and wire mesh guts. I'm sure one or more of the Corvette parts houses that advertise in Hemmings carries them. Ran those with polished early finned Corvette air cleaners and it looked great. Rick

DQ had it right, Bobs409 had it wrong, honest REPUBLICAN?, oxymoron!. Think Cheney.

1959 Impala with fuelie, 12 built, all 245hp 283 (no solid lifter), no fuelie in 1958 (348 fuelie planned but only that). No 2x4 283's after 1957, why?, with the 348?. 283's had no torque (compared to 348.

If your going to do it Rick Coleman has the right way, first find a stock factory small block intake. Another option is an after market intake, grind off the Edlebrock, make it look stock, then come up with the small louvered individual air cleaners used by Pontiac on their 2x4 set ups.

Fran:

245 horsepower 283 was a 2X4 bbl. hyd. lifter engine not a fuel injected engine.

Richard, again, your right, the engine I MEANT was the hydraulic cam fuel injection rated at 250 hp.

Here's one for you and any others, what engine, any CID, was rated at 345 hp?. It would have been between 1962 and 1967. I ask because I have some gold foil stickers, the kind they put on valve covers, that have 345hp on them. I couldn't come up with a motor.

PS: I know the 1962 409 used DECALS not stickers.

Fran:

The only 345 horsepower engine I can think of is the '70 reg. cam 454. Can't remember an earlier engine with that rating.

Richard: it's a gold foil sticker, I think they stopped using them in '67?. I bought 5 or 6 just because I couldn't think of an engine that used them. I think they're still available from resto venders.

The only thing that comes to mind is the 69 Firebird Ram Air IV 400 ci. 345 hp. I know I've seen those stickers before! Seems to me I saw that HP rating on the hood of a 60s Daytona car

I don't think Pontiac used a gold foil sticker, only Chevrolet
