with a fresh re-build, all nos parts is there a need for a high volume oil pump, or use a reg pump,
409 C/I (340 hp.), all stock except a mild cam...

I was told that there can sometimes be a problem with the oil not draining back out of the heads fast enough when you use a high volume pump. Apparently if there is going to be a problem it will show up when the engine is run at high RPM's for a few minutes. Like fast highway cruising, especially with low gears. If course I heard about this AFTER installing a high volume pump. But Curt Harvey told me It'd probably be okay but he did warn me to keep an eye on it when I first hit the road. So I guess the standard pump is the better way to go.

My engine builder says that we only need standard oil pumps. He only puts high volume pumps in engines that spend a lot of time at LOW rpm's or idling. He said that when you crank the rpm's up on a standard pump, they flow plenty of volume. Like jim said, a high volume pump can sometimes pump too much volume and there are drainage problems.

DITTO... I only use HV pump on loose (worn out) engines. NEVER high pressure. Both cost more HP.

With my long talk with Guy Mitchell this subject came up .
He asked about what pump I was using because the load that a high volume pump can create can cause the cam to be pulled to the rear of the engine.
As the cam turns it has to spin the pump and with high loads it puts a strain on the distributor gear trying to turn the oil pump.
If you think about it it make sence,,,,,,
I have a standard pump in there,,,, the pump came with two springs and you needed to change to the stronger spring if you wanted higher oil volume.
Any thoughts on this ?,,,,dq

Small block TRW High Vol. pump. Flows more oil and with stock or (close to stock) bearing clearances, idles@50 PSI and bypasses 80 PSI. Rat pump drive works great too!

Look at the Melling 55 A pump all so. I use these in everthing.
Its the 69 Z28 Pump Idle pressure 35-40
60 to 65 Its not high Vol. about 10.00 higher than a stock pump.

DQ, changing the spring in your pump to the stronger one will increase pressure but not increase volume. The high volume pumps have a deeper body with longer gears inside.

bungy, i like your quote. ever think about makeing it into a sticker?

I read the past post on the oil pumps. So does this mean that if your running a 700r4 trany that you should use a HV pump, because your rpm will be low in overdrive?

Art: What va said, best way for your engine, don't go high volume or high pressure, don't need it with your engine, don't worry about volume in OD, stock Corvettes use 2.59/2.73 gears standard, mine had optional 3.08's and had good oil pressure in OD, more than enough.

I forgot to ask about pickup tube and screen. Is this also sbc, is there a preferred years?
Thanks everyone,

Hi Bob,
Go with the stock pump.
Less horsepower to drive it :D and you won't need the extra volume with all the new parts and tight tolerances.

What bolt is used to attach the oil pump? Is it a special bolt? I've seem to have lost mine.
