This will probably be an easy one In the trunk of my 64 ss was a bellhousing with cast numbers 3899621. ? Is there any way to tell what engine this car had by theese numbers? The engine and xmsn are long gone and the guy I got it from had no idea what was original to the car. Any info or Ideas would be much appreciated.

Well AMPCO, the only info I can offer is that I can simplify your question:p ....
That bell housing never would have been original equipment on a 64 Chevrolet.

A couple guidelines:

5/16" ( small fuel line )..... 283 ( or 6 cyl if the 3rd digit of your serial number is a 7 )

3/8" ( large fuel line )...... 327 or 409

If the car had a Geritol ( auto ) transmission.... it can't be a 400 or 425 HP ( high perf ) 409

If the car had a factory 4 speed... it can't be a 283 or 6

Those are few ways to identify what the engine would've been

And in addition to Aubrey's post

If it had 3/8" fuel line and a 3/16" return line it was a 409.

I don't know if it came from a 64,BUT that bell housing will allow you to use a 168 tooth flywheel and a big 11" clutch. Took me a month to find one for my car ,but then again I don't have much of anything original on mine. The guy I got mine from said it came from a big-block Chevelle. Have fun!:D

#3899621 was used from 65-72 on just about all engine applications. As Ed said, it was used for the 11" clutch, from the 230 6-cylinder to the 454. The 168 tooth flywheel is correct. It was used on all fullsize, Chevy Nova, Camaro and Chevelle. They are usually plentiful to find but they crack real easy in the lower portion.

Thanks for the info I will find out what size the fuel lines are. I have also heard that the factory equiped ss with tach on dash and 4 speed was at least 300 horse 327 or above:D mine has the factory tach, correction had factory tach its long gone now. But will again someday.

The dash tach was also optional for all motors. RPO U16
