View Full Version : 63 impala ss blowin oil
we have a 63 ss w/409 4spd.
engine is blowing oil out of the oil filler .
i don't think there is a pvc system.
no sure about a draft tube.
this is my bros father in law and i"m trying to help him with his car.
i would appreciate any help with what could cause this or what system needs to be in place on a 409.
i have a 67 nova w/small block ,not real familiar w/409's.
thanks:(

N344.In 63 they used a pcv system. On the back of your intake manifold there should be a 1/2 inch tube about 1 1/2 inchs long.On the back of your front carb(2x4) there should be a 90 deg fitting to use a screw in pcv valve.Take enought 1/2 hose and run it from the back of the intake manifold to the pcv valve.

N344,Also if you have a push on oil cap replace your oil filler tube and cap with twist on cap this will help it 100%.I had the same problem when first ran my 09.(what a mess.) I'f you can't find the parts you need in you area show cars will have everything you need. www.show-cars.com

Can worn rings be the cause of this? My 63 340hp engine blows a little oil, under more "spirited" driving. Comes out of the filler tube and a little out of the dip stick tube. My PCV valve still rattles but could it still be bad? I'm almost sure its the one the car left the factory with. This engine has never been rebuilt.

Impalagura.I had new rings and my 09 still blew oil out the filler cap.N344 didn't what condition of this 09.I had the same problem with the dipstick tube when dragracing seems to me the 409 has a poor crankcase venting system.I had to install a crankcase evacuation system to fix this problem.I sure did't want drill holes and install breather caps in my near perfect valve covers.I should have used a beat up set of valve covers.

N344, Welcome Aboard !!! I also had this same problem with a new engine !
I replaced my oil breather cap (cheap one) with a new Mr.Gasket one and didn`t have any problems after that.
Also had the PCV system also hooked up before the cap change.
Still get oil around the dip stick at high RPM though.
I`m am going to a pan vac system shortly and hope that helps !
Jim K , Is this the type of system you went to ?
If you don`t know the condition of your engine do a leak down test,,,dq

dq409,I got my crankcase evacuation system from Jeg's Mr Gasket makes it part# 720-6002 for $31.99.it comes as kit.tubes are welded into the header collectors than you screw on ck vavles then you install breathers into your vavle covers and install a hose between them.

Jim isn't that system made for engines with open headers?I used it for many years on race cars, but with mufflers causing some back pressure the one way valves would stay closed leaving the only way out the breather and the dipstick. Some race cars now use a vacuum pump to pull crank case gasses.
Take the hose off the valve cover when the engine is running and see if it sucks.
