How does one remove the vin tag and clean up the rust underneath of it????? It doesnt have rivets holding it on it looks spot welded on. Will I need to reinstall with rivets? Has anyone else here dealt with this because mine has flakes of rust falling out from behind it. 64SS

Mine had a big rust blister coming out from under it too so I just popped it off with a screwdriver so I could sandblast and paint that area. It seemed to be tack welded on. ??? It won't take much to get it off if yours is like mine.
I still haven't put mine back on (not driving car) but was thinking of using some type of adhesive. It will appear that it's still installed the same as it was as it still has the dimples on it yet.

Thanks for the info. I guess it shouldnt be to hard to pop off because the rust will help too loosen it. I just want to make sure that I dont tear the tag.:D

Mine didn't. The rust helped mine too! :D
Just don't go around saying you removed the tag yourself. (like I just did) LOL It is illegal to remove a VIN tag they say. Just say....it fell off so you re-attached it. :p
Having our tags attached the way they are is helpful actually. Newer cars had the rose shaped rivets that you would have to find/buy and then "somehow" reinstall. No need for that on our cars...
