Bell Housing Question...
Will an Aluminum Bellhousing, GM part # 3899621 bolt up to a 61' 348 block?
I'm looking at an M-20 Wide Ratio tranny for my 348 (about 320 hp, not a race motor but a good street motor) and I think this bellhousing is a replacement part from GM for a big block???

Thanks for the help!

yep. for 11 inch flywheel, 168 tooth. Use a BB starter. Diagonal bolt pattern.

Roscoe, just make sure that you don't pay any more than about $60 for that bell housing;) !

Thanks for the 'heads up'!

Actually, it is part of a whole set-up that is for sale that I'm going to look at this evening...

M-20 Wide ratio (#3885010, 1965' - 1967')
Hurst shifter and linkage
GM aluminum bell housing # 3899621
Fly wheel, 11" 168 tooth
Gm factoy fork

He claims that it is in perfect condition and has never had any issues.
I obviously plan on pulling the side cover for a quick inspection of the gears and what not... anything in particular I should pay close attention to?

He's asking $450.00

Aubrey is right, about 60 is what I would give. Fly wheel maybe 25. Fork $1. (if its the later bent one) 65 - 70 (?) had a straight one. Hurst shifter/linkage $100 if it shifts good. You can take them apart, clean and lube it. M-20 descent shape (they've all been used!!) $200 -300. A kit is a little more than $100.

Ebay on the right day, might be $750.

Check for stipped threads in the bell. Which side the speedo is on. Does the side cover have studs or bolts (better) to mount the arms. I think that tranny has the 7/8 counter shaft. 1 inch is better. Check the brass and sinkros. All there? Supposed to be some what pointed. (there WILL be some ware) Chipped, pitted or rusty gears. It will most likely make noise.

Hard to do without being there. Hope I helped.

Thanks Tom!
I'm first to admit that I'm no tranny expert. I appreciate all your help.
The research that I have done pretty much confirms what you are saying with one exception. I found a Muncie I.D. guide that has the 1704, 1325 castings to have the 7/8" counter shaft and the 5010 to have the 1"...?

Like buying any used piece of equipment, there is probably more to the story as to why a guy is selling something. If I was smart, I'd go down and buy a rebuit one from a shop that has a warranty and done right the first time.

Thanks,
Ross
I'll let you know what I fine out on this deal.
