I got this hard cover book, Super Stock: Drag Racing the Family Sedan, at laest a year ago. I saw it at a speed shop, opened it up, looked it over and ran to the counter to plunk my $40.00 down. I know now this is a source some of the poster here use, and it's chock full of AMAZING pictures of 409's/Z-11's we've all been talking about. Disclaimer, I just looked it over again and STILL haven't read it cover to cover my BAD!.

Anyway, go to Ebay, Barnes and Nobles, Amazon, and order yourself a copy. It covers every make, a lot of Chevy's, it's gonna cost you $50 shipped (it's HARD COVER, not soft), but worth every dollar. Anyone who has a copy feel free to comment, review it, and tell me if there's another that even comes CLOSE.

Fran, thanks for the tip. I found it on Amazon.com for $28.00 with free shipping. Just ordered it. Looks like great reading and they had some great reviews of the book.

I got that book about 2 years ago. Started reading immediatly. And as with all publications I found errors. Can't remember what but I'm sure it was about 409s. I see SOOOO many people fooled into beleaving print as gosple. Books, mag, and catalogs. It is a neat book though.

As usual, you guys just gave me another idea! (thanks, more work for me! :D :p )

Perhaps we should make a section listing all publications that pertain to our 1958-65's and 348/409's. A description of each and if I can find a way, a rating system where anyone that has read it, can vote 1-10 right on the page as to what they thought of it.

With all that, we can have notes depicting any mistakes within them so none of our people fall for the errors.

This would have to be a group participation. I think it sings. So whatcha all think?

Bob,
Sounds like a great idea to me, don't know how you find the time to do all this but I sure do appreciate it.

Fran:

You are right...it's a great book on the history of drag racing.

I have had my personalized!!! You guys can too!! I take mine when I'm going somewhere the racers are....and have them autograph it!!!! Got Hayden, Terry Prince, Tom Jacobson autographs!! Makes it more personal for me!!

Buy yourself one and then bring it to the Convention!!! There will be autographs available, I'm sure!!!!

SS: if your referring to some of the times listed for 409's they match the times from tracks around the country as reported in 1961-1963 Hot Rod magazine when they did monthly reports from the tracks. As one who was there, the cars pictured in the book ARE the way cars looked (and performed) back then. What made the book interesting to me is how much different cars BACK THEN were to the so called "nostalgia" cars being raced today. Especially the fact that before about 1965 wrinkle wall slicks didn't exist, you raced on a hard sidewall slick that by the rules were only 7 inches wide. Think about that a minute, about one inch wider than a dollar bill!. Today were fed pablum about how "we wished" things were rather than how it REALLY was!.

Phil, as usual, has a GREAT idea!. And maybe by having the real guys there this book will bring back memories, a good thing too.

Fran, do you allways ASSUME what another person is talking about? I posted I couldn't remember what it was. I just know there WAS something WRONG. I guess I have to drag my broken leg to the book shelf and refresh my memory. NO it wasn't the times.

One error I noticed is the author's statement that the 409 block had a higher deck height then the 348 block.

Ditto Richard. Page 30 2nd paragraph. Also intake wouldn't enterchange 409/348. 1st paragraph, 348 to 409 - stroke lengthened 1/4 - rods were longer. I don't think so. Pg 38 2nd column 2nd paragraph. 283 block and 327 crank makes 302.?? Thought that was 307. The point is NO ONE KNOWS EVERYTHING. Anyone can make print. I am always the first to admit I don't know it all. I'm learning all the time. Still a neat book.

The pictures alone are worth the price of the book.

GLORY DAYS by Jim Wangers is another great book.
