I am hunting for a 3970010 Block for a 350 and have learned in the process that
the same block was used for the 302, 327, and 350 engines. Whe I look at the engine with the heads on how can I tell which it is. I know I can look at date codes to eliminate some possibilities, but is there anothewr more obviuos way?
The 327 ran from 62 until 68 or 69???I beleive?
The 302 was a around 69 or 70...Help here please?
Is there a date after which there were no more 327s or 302s built in this block casting number?
The same casting can be either 2 bolt or 4 bolt. I know there were some 4 bolt 305s, but were there ever any 4 bolt 327s or 302s?
Can a 3970010 block be bored out to 4.005 (350CID) if it was originally built as one of the others? I have found two blocks to check out, but want to be sure I don't get the wrong thing when I go look tomorrow.
Thanks

The standard 302/327/350 bore is 4.00. A typical "cleanup" overbore will start at 10 thousandths and typical max is 60 thousandths (4.060"). I think you may have meant "4.050" in your question.
I've never seen a large-journal 327 (post 1968) but I've heard of them... With the casting you're specifying, you have about a 99.5+% chance of getting a 350, since the 302's were only in the Camaro. If you DO somehow end up with a 302, buy it, and grin all the way home, because you've made a real find that's quite valuable to the Camaro guys.

You can't trust anybody theses days! I picked up my engine last night, paid for it, and as soon as I got home (11:00), put it on the engine stand ready to get at this morning. I asked 4 times if he was sure it was a 4 bolt, in English and in French, and lo and behold this morning when I pulled the pan it is a two bolt. Shame on me :doh :doh :( . At least it was nice and clean inside. We're building it to use for the summer only, and then I do a 4 bolt. I trust too easily I'm afraid #+*?%##
