There's an aluminum intake on eBay. Seller stated that it's for a 409 only, '62 and up. Any chance this would work on my '59 348? Thanks, Ed

That is a 409 High Performance intake. It won't fit 348 or low performance 409 heads. Only the 690 or 583 heads will work with this. I'm not positive the 690 or 583s will work on a 348 bore. Valves are big, and might not clear the bore.

The hi-po heads will work on a 348. I have a set and put them on a 348 block just to see and the valves clear. Ed, that intake will bolt up to your 348 heads and it will run but not very good. The runners in that intake are much larger then the intake ports on 348 or lo-po 409 heads. The incoming air/fuel mixture will run right into a wall. So, like Fred stated, you will have to have the matching heads to make it work.

Bungy, Thanks for the info. Would it be possible to port out the intake passages in the heads to match the alum. intake? Ed

It would be a waste of time and little or no value. IMO,,,, of the design of the low horse heads would still hold back your power,,,dq

The high performance intake will bolt on but the bolt between the ports doesn't line up and must be left out. So along with the mismatched ports you might increase the chances of vacume leaks. The ports on the hi-perf. heads are at least a 1/4" taller so you couldn't port the 348 heads out far enough to match but you could get them closer. Better alternatives might include a 348, tri power manifold or a new Offenhauser dual-quad. Showcars sells them, about $300 I think. Or best of all wait untill Aubrey starts selling the manifold He's been designing and arranging to get manufactured. I think it's going to be a single plane, Torker style, 4 barrel manifold. It should out perform all of the old stuff. Here's a link to Showcars...

Sorry, I really made a mess of this post. My 348 has '63-'65 409 heads, 3830817. So, the aluiminum intake manifold will bolt on with correctly matching ports. Again, sorry for not remembering this when first posting the question. Ed

Ed... no they won't !
For that intake, you need the "690" or "583" castings. The "817" castings are basically indentical to the "147" 348 high performance head.... still small or "low" port.

The '61 409 intake will fit your heads, it is basically the 348 aluminum intake with larger openings for the carb throttle blades and a different casting number, 3797776. Want one ?
