We had a really bad hail storm in Colorado about three weeks ago. Between our cars, the wife's, my duallie hauler and little pickup and the car trailer, the roof at home and at the business, we are pushing $50,000 in damage. The '62 was snug in the garage. No worries. It happened so fast that there was no way to protect anything left outside. I ran out to at least get something into the garage and anyplace that was not protected by the hat, heavy jacket and jeans got hit. Imagine getting smacked by a marble from a slingshot. Everyplace was swollen, red and brusied for a couple of days. I was fortunate because there were some stones the size of a tennis ball, but I don't think one of those hit me although I probably deserved it. It hurt enough that I just went back inside and watched the destruction. It even blew a hole all the way into the attic in one place where the shingles were newer, but it was a 60 year old underlayment.

The reason I am mentioning this aside from the amusement value is that we have replacement insurance. No, I don't sell insurance. Without it we could not have afforded to replace the roof. They cut a check on site for the depreciated value of the roof which turned out to be about 40% of the replacement cost. They pay the rest after the work is actually done. It's worth considering if you don't already have it.

tm,that must have hurt,I've been caught at a car show with my 57 lucky the hail was only pea size I was still gritting my teeth

Good tip on the replacement insurance I got mine last month my insurance agent even called and asked if I wanted to add it to my policy I think it cost a extra $ 5 :)

I heard you could pop out hail dents with a light bulb. You just hold the light bulb next to the dent and the heat pops the dent up :dunno

Michael:

Ouch, that must have really hurt!

Sorry to hear of the damage. Even though you have replacement, there's still all that inconvenience you have to go through to set things right. Big time drain...

At least the bubbletop was safe! Somebody up there likes you :)

Best,
TomK

O MAN !!! OUCH !!!

I worked in a body shop years ago and worked on a hail car,,,,

Looked like some pis*ed off girlfriend took a ballpeen hammer to it !!

We heated each (hundreds) dent with a torch then layed an ice cube to pop them up. then the torch again and wet rag.

Nothing will bring up the dent other then a torch and a complete body and paint job when they are that bad.

Glad you and the 62 are alright and the stuff can be replaced,,,,dq

Well Tom, understandably somebody likes the Bubbletop at least. And yes, our life has been adjusters and Catastrophe Inspectors/Reinspectors and phone calls and tons of paperwork. Then all the disruption of people replacing the roof. A pain for sure.

Jim - some of the dents pop out due to heat from the Sun or as you suggest a lightbulb. Others sometimes snap back using dry ice. I put it in a sock, wet only at the end and handled it on the dry part of the sock. Just set it on there and in a little while it made a sort of snap sound and while not perfect, it's okay for the roof of the trucks.
