Anybody know the weight of a bare 348/409 block ?

Just by moving a few around the garage. I would say in the range of 150 to 200 lbs. But that's just an educated guess. I have never actually weighed one.

Unworthy. that was a interesting question. So I took the bathroom scales to the garage. Bungy was pretty close. The bare 348 block weight was 184 lb. + or- 3lbs for scale error. Also a 348 bare head, casting # 3758879 was 55 lb.

Yeh, I did the same thing after lifting a 348 block from the back of my pickup some years ago, that is I put it on the bathroom scales, 180 lbs is what it weighed!

Ok Guy's we have 364 lbs to go :D Block=180 Heads=106.total=286.

Total weight of 409 is approx 650lbs.minus 286= 364lbs seems like alot of weight to make for the rest of the engine?

We need members to start weighting parts :D

We're still missing the carb(s), valve covers, timing cover, bearings, freeze plugs, and of course all the bolts holding this thing together. Should the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate and generator be included the engine weight? I'm just wondering if maybe these engines aren't as heavy as we thought. Maybe someone can weigh a complete motor? :dunno

Somewhere I have a Chevy interoffice memo with most of the weights. Your right, don't include the starter, generator and brackets, clutch assembly. Blue also counted the exhaust manifolds at 26 lbs, I think that was each. From what I remeber engine weights were complete minus accessrories (starter, generator, fan blade, clutch assembly). I don't know exact weights of all the parts on a 1962 327 and 1962 409, but if I were a betting man I'd say the difference between the two was about 100 lbs. Heads would be 30 more, block maybe 40, crank maybe 20, rods maybe 5 or 6, pistons a couple of pounds (they're both aluminum), water pump a couple of pounds, exhaust a couple of pounds, the big gain was in the block, crank and heads.

When we built the bubbletop, it weighed 2105, less engine, trans, bellhousing, clutch, driveshaft, radiator, and fluids. When it was race ready, with all those components, it weighed 3107, less driver. That is using a Lakewood bellhousing, Mcleod Aluminum flywheel and pressure plate, the Jerico (weighs @ 70 lbs), an aluminum radiator, steel one piece driveshaft, and fluids. By those figures, the 409 must weigh over 650 lbs, that is with iron heads and block, 409 crank, aluminum rods, and a lot of titanium in the valvetrain.

P.S., it still runs 10.10's @134+

I don't believe the numbers for the W block, there's NO way it weighs the same as a Mark IV, not even CLOSE!. 685 for both?. I'll buy the Mark IV but the W block is much less. Anyone out there that has picked up both parts will tell you that. Or you COULD believe the 348/409 weighs 15 lbs less than a 392 Hemi.

Bob, I think you've got some new informational resources to post somewhere on this fine site!!!

Thanks to all who have "stood on the scales" and added all these values up.
