A 61 belair parkwood is a car im looking for, ive seen them with all kinds of upgrades, but never with a 348 or 409. the 283 or 6 always comes up in it. did they ever put 348 or 409's in these wagons of 61, if they did, does that make them somewhat rare? thanks for your time fellas

I purchased a somewhat complete 1960 348 that came out of a 4 door Chevy station wagon. Had a PowerGlide attached to it. Still have both. It was the 250HP variety. I saw the vehicle it came out of, but it was removed by the owner of the yard.

So I'm guessing they were ocassional options for powering those "grocery getters" :) If you think about it, a heavier wagon requires more torque, the 348 was a low cost upgrade, and this made sense to the informed buyer back in the early 1960s. I suspect the convertibles on the pedastals caught the eye of the Dads, luring them into the dealership, but the Moms won out and selected the station wagon. Then Dad stepped up and checked the box for the engine upgrade as a consolation prize :)

Hope you find what you are looking for!

Cheers!

It would be common to see more 6's and 283's as they were the base engines. Plus the fact that the Parkwood was a lower cost car so the type of person that bought a "cheaper" car wouldn't normally be one that would want to spring for any extra's like a larger engine.

The 348 and 409 could have been ordered for any body style so I'm sure there were probably a few 348 powered Parkwoods made but the odds of a 409 powered Parkwood,,,, I'd guess very slim if any since there were only 142 409's made that year. (just a theory, I have no other numbers to back anything up)
