Does anyone know if you can use anything other than the Dextron II or III in a GM automatic transmision? What about the +3 or F varietiers? What is the differance between the differant kinds?

Im sorry for the plug but you can look at my site for info on racing atf fluid
http://www.oil4kids.com/art.html
or
http://www.oil4kids.com/atf.html
the difference in atfs are mostly in friction properties to prevent clutch glazing and Kinematic Viscosity
also atf fluid has wear additives not unlike gear lubes
AMSOIL Torque-Drive is recommended as a direct replacement for TranSynd® Synthetic ATF in heavy duty, on and off highway automatic transmissions manufactured by Allison®, General Motors®, Ford®, Voith® and ZF® or wherever the standards TES-295, C-4, Dexron® III, Mercon® or TE-ML 14C are specified.
I believe Amsoil has the lowest 4 ball wear data but Royal Purple and Red line are also very good and if amsoil was not available I would use either one myself
look at

http://www.redlineoil.com/products_gearlubricants.asp?subcatID=19
http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/prodsua.html#bu4
sorry again for the plug but petroleum oils are 3rd world

Thanks for the reply! I guess I should have stated my real question. I put +3 in my TH350. I guess that +3 is made for Chrylser transmissions. Will it damage my trans if I leave it in there? I've always owned man. trans. cars and I was a little confused when I had to buy ATF for my 69 Olds.

Not too sure about the +3 but I`ve read and been told that you can use F Type as a subsitute for a tighter shift.
I would call a good trans shop and ask.
I`ve used Trick Shift the last few trans and think it works great !
When I pulled my TCI trans after years of use the inside of the pan looked like a low mile trans. Very little gunk on the pan. ,,, dq

I've used Type F in my 69 Chevelle powerglide to see if it would improve the shift but didn't notice much of a difference. It didn't hurt anything.
