View Full Version : ANOTHER water pump question...DOH!
Ok, I know how message boards work, I tried the search function. What I found is dis-appointing?
Is it true that 348 water pumps are as rare as Chicken Lips?
I have been all over the net tonight looking to no avail.
I do have a core, dont know if it good, is there a rebuild kit part # I can give my local parts guys? I run the front end of a rod and custom shop and have a good local parts house that is willing to go the extra mile.
What the hell does Cornhusker use for his Flathead conversion? Should I curse him for the shortage of W motor waterpumps? :D
Thanks folks!

Quite a few 348/409 water pumps show up on eBay. I've got a couple in storage for various purposes (a Flathead included) because they're tough to get for reasonable prices or from the local NAPA.
I believe that you can rebuild them with SBC internals.

Now dq you be nice! :D Show Cars did make the trip to KC. Forgive and Forget. Some might take these comments the wrong way. Not all have met you and know how soft and cuddley you really are :rofl
As far as pumps, I bought a rebuilt early small block pump for $17 then took the bearing seal and shaft assembly out of it and put it in my 348 pump. Made the thousand mile trip to KC with no troubles :clap You do need to use the 348 impeller though and a good hydraulic press is a must! Measure the exact height of your old pump before taking it apart so you end up the same when done. There are easier ways to go, but some of you are learning how cheap I am. ;) NUT

Jim, I did see that reply and fell out of my chair !!! Heeee Heeee
Just razzing you brother !! :D
And yes Phil,,,,,,,, Where is that website ????? Or catalog? Or anything !!???
As far as SC goes,,,, Twice burned, thrice shy !!!
And did you see that exhaust system they brought? Poor quality and bends.
And the clamps and hangers are the wrong size. 2 1/2" clamps for a 2 1/4 system !
One member, I won`t name, bought this system and had to redo some bends and it came with 3" clamps. When he called about that they said "too bad" thats the way it is. :doh
Needless to say,,, they don`t care about quality or customer satisfaction.
On the other hand, the exhaust system I won at the convention from "Shafer Classic " was top notch with extremely nice bends that were not over pinched, mandrel quality. I was VERY impressed with the quality !!
And,,, he even found the time to contact me the following morning, shake my hand and ask what I thought about the system!
This my friends is the way to do business !!!
Not on my soap box,,,,, just making a point ,,,,, Fluffy

One day last fall, I learned more about water pumps than I ever knew!! I had a Z-11 water pump that needed rebuilt and I wouldn't ship it UPS. So, I loaded up the dually with it and about 10 other water pumps and made the 4 hour trip...one way....to rebuilder than we have used for over 10 years. That was a very educational day for me.
The pumps are taken apart and while the body is being shot-peened, the front of the impeller is machined smooth. The factory style of sealing was an "interference fit" (for lack of better term on my part) between the back of the water pump housing and the front of the impeller. Obviously, with time, both become grooved with wear. Then the pump body is machined. The impeller is re-sized for a new, better sealing bearing. Plus, the shaft is .002-.003" oversize. That way the flange is still tight after it is re-installed. That just eliminates another potentional problem with the flange. The dimension on the back side of the impeller to the steel backing plate is critical too. If the impeller is too far back...you will not have proper water flow thru the pump. Too far forward..and you won't have any flow at all.
We can have your pump rebuilt for $65 plus return shipping to you. AND YOU GET YOUR PUMP BACK......not someone else's core. That is important if you have the proper date coded pump on your engine. Turn-around for us is 2-3 days. In my way of thinking...having it done this way is cheap insurance that you don't have to worry about your water pump!!
I am not smart enough or rich enough to have a website. It would take forever to catalog all this "stuff" I have to make any sort of lists. Best thing to do is call. I'm really old school...be careful Fred what you say to me about being old!!!.....I still type with 2 fingers!!
JimW...we have alot of parts and all the repo too. Just call with a list of what you need. Other than 690 or Z-11 heads....hopefully we can help you. I've attached a picture of one of our rebuilt pumps.
Thanks

Well................it's more than $50 and less than $5000!!!!!!!!!!!! :rofl :rofl :rofl
Actually, I'm trying to find a top half for it. Need something for Tony to use on my own engine together for my car.
Hello, I,ve got another question for you pros. Can I put a small block waterpump shaft in my 409 housing, and then use a small block fan with the smaller bolt pattern?? Thanx Stew
