I just bought a 1938 Seagrave fire truck that has a 348/409 style engine swapped in. How do I tell what it is (size and HP, car or truck ...etc)?

What does one of these motors sound like? are they similar to a regular big block chevy? Does anybody have a sound clip?

FYI...I will be building a street rod out of the truck. The idea of keeping the 348/409 is appealing to me.

Flipper,

The most accurate way is to decode the suffix and casting numbers by using the charts on this site.

The suffix code can be found stamped on the pad on front of the block under the passenger side head. The block casting number is on the rear of the block and has raised cast in characters.

Suffix code chart-> www.348-409.com/suffix.html
Casting codes-> www.348-409.com/cast.html

Lots of other informative links that can be accessed from the main page. www.348-409.com

By the way that Seagrave originally came with a V-12 flathead I believe. Seagrave bought the engine dies from Pierce Arrow when they went belly up.:)

Hey CPG just down loaded the sound clip, took 16 minutes on my dialup, but DAMMUM it's worth it. My reaction to it was , whoops, this is a family board...:cool: :cool: :cool: ...09

Is it possible to repair a busted 409 block?

We finally tore into the block in the firetruck and found it to be a 409. The problem is water went down the intake sometime in the past and froze in the cylinder.

Can a block we welded up? ....maybe welded up and sleeved?

Anybody got a cheap truck block lying around?

Here's the same car... 425HP , open 1 7/8" headers 1ith 10" long 3" collector extensions / 4.56 gears on stock tires.

Run out of the water box in 2nd gear

Flipper, yes, you CAN sleeve that block... but you'll need a machine shop that knows what they're doing.
