I used the search mode but am still confused. I bought a starter for my 348 Chevy. Normal SBC starter with 2 mounting bolts Perpendicular to the crank. My block has the starter mount holes FRONT and REAR, PARALELL with the crank. What do I need to know? do I ahve to order a weird starter? I believe my new flexplate is 168 teeth.

:? My 09 starter bolts run parallel with my crank are you saying your starter bolt holes in your block are in the front and rear parallel to the crank? :?

Tman,

On my 61 Brookwood aplication I bought a 396/427 starter, and it fit nicely for the 348 :clap ( the cast iron nose w/ 3 mounting holes) we also use 168 flywheel.

Cheers

OK, I have 3 holes in the block. two are tapped, they are front and rear parralell to the crank center line (longitudinal). there is one outboard hole like a later small block that is NOT tapped. Also, when a 70 SBC started is held up, the outer hole is to close to the inside one for outer starter hole to hit it or any black material for that matter?

I'm a bit confused by the description here. Paralell and Perpendicular??? so I'll just say this: A 168 tooth wheel uses a starter with "staggered" bolts. A 153 tooth wheel uses a starter with bolts that are straight across.

Hope my description makes sense now. :D

Sounds like you need to tap the outside hole then return the starter you bought and see if they can give you the correct one.If they can not supply with a correct starter call Phil Reed to get you the correct one.

Going to try the staggared bolt starter today, I have a hunch that my outside hole needs to be tapped. I will keep you updated.

You guys do know what parallel and perpendicular mean? :D

OK, I DO HAVE THE STAGGARED holes!!!!! The outside hole was full of old paint and as hard as cast steel! I couldnt see the threads at all. I tried a spare stater at the shop and all is well.
