This is the block I have in my 62 SS Impala. The casting number on the block is 3830814 , next to the casting number is CFD, which tells me the block was casted in the Central Foundry Division in Saginaw Michigan. Due to the block having the CFD to the right of the casting number, the (Chevy by the Numbers book) says the casting date code is above the oil canister area. I found the code, and it reads J12. Which would mean October 1st, 1962. Now this is where I get lost. On the opposits side of the block, the right hand side, behind the head, there are three numbers -263 . The Chevy by the number book says all 63 to 65 409 blocks have the "X" in the front of the head. I have no "X" where it should be. I have wire wheeled of the paint, and found nothing. The engine stamp on the front of the block reads TIOI9QB, which would mean the block was assembled at the Tonowanda plant on October 19, 1962. So the the block was casted on October 1st, 1962 and assembled October 19, 1962. My questiopns are-
What is the 263 on the back of the block?
Why doesn't this block have an "X" on it?
Thanks Rob

Rob,

I've always heard the "X" started with the 1963 blocks but since yours is such an early build, perhaps it wasn't used yet. (just a guess)

The 263 is most likely a Julian build date. That would be the 263rd day of 1962.

Im sure others will chime in and offer more...

263 comes out to be Sept 20th. That really confuses things.
